WAYPOINT
Some people hate horses, some like them just fine, and some love them. Occasionally, though, you’ll meet a true horse whisperer, as photographer Dusan Smetana did when he first witnessed a gaucho by the name of Pascual Yancan-queo wrangling horses on a hunt in Argentina. Yancanqueo spoke no English and Smetana doesn’t speak Spanish or Mapuche, Pascual’s native language, but several things were apparent. The cowboy is agile—“like a mountain lion”—and he has no fear around horses. The caballos in his care repay him with their hard work, affection, and, in this case especially, their trust.
