THE LUSH 13-ACRE GROUNDS at the former “Inwood,” a grand old Philadelphia Main Line estate, recently received a substantial uplift by the internationally recognized design firm of Doyle Herman Design Associates. Nothing was overlooked in their clever enhancement of the wooded landscape and hardscape that surrounds the circa 1921 stone mansion. Both the homeowners and principal James Doyle agreed that the soothing vistas of open space and legacy trees were the mainstay of the iconic property but that new garden spaces for modern outdoor living, and a sculpture collection, were desirable. When Doyle and lead designer Heather Harris first arrived at the suburban property, the clients had already carefully renovated the classical house with the help of New York-based interior designer Victoria Hagan (with whom DHDA have worked before). Overlooking Teton Range sits what appears to be a historic log house—only it’s not. Barnes Vanze Architects was asked to make this home’s colonial-style interior match its Mediterranean-style exterior, but the client didn’t want to “pretend” the house was in Italy. The result is a design that tips a hat to Mediterranean influences while retaining a modern, clean aesthetic. A few of the details: • Swapping double-hung windows for a combination of French doors and casement windows • Re-stuccoing the exterior with a natural stucco that’s unpainted, giving it some of the hand texturing and weathering you’d expect on a true Mediterranean building • Decorative details like bracketed moldings above the French doors; deeper sills on the windows; bracket details underneath the roof overhang; and wrought iron porch • Opening a previously enclosed side porch with arched openings• Painting the exterior windows and doors…

SET IN PICTURESQUE WaterColor, Florida, the house that the prospective homeowners imagined would be a little bit different from those in the surrounding area. Being Louisiana natives, they wanted a Creole style vacation home—an uncommon vocabulary for a Florida beach house. For help, the couple tapped Tim Adams, AIA, lead architect and founder of T.S.
