One of the highlights for so many over the Bedfordshire Steam & County Fayre weekend 13-15 September was Mike Sutciffe’s brilliant restoration of the 1921 Leyland G7 BD209 which ended up as a farm trailer. The Dodson B32D body was found as a garden shed at Irthingborough, Bedfordshire. In the livery of Charabus. After being warned before not to have his under-aged grandson in the cab of his tractor, 78-year-old William Walters from Tirmynydd Farm, Swansea, was fined £3,000 on Tuesday 27 August in Swansea Crown Court. William Walters was subject to a complaint by a neighbour who expressed concerns when it was noted he was operating the tractor with his grandchild on board. At the sentencing it was stated it is clearly an offence under the Health & Safety Act to allow a child under the age of 13 to ride in a tractor, let alone drive it. Previously in November 2020 Walters had been warned by the Health & Safety Executive about a similar situation and was served with a prohibition order which stopped him carrying anyone under the age of…

It was great to see farmer Simon Clark out with his 72-year old Massey-Harris 744PD hi-clear which he has rallied for seven years. Over the last winter the starter ring gear has been changed. He was also showing for the first time his Massey-Harris 333 which he purchased through Tractor & Machinery magazine recently. This ex-Bob Parks of Marshami in Norfolk tractor was imported from Canada and given the full works by Bob’s team. The 333 replaced the 33 in 1956 and was in production for two years, with some 2,748 produced. It carries the Continental E206 3.4 litre 35dbhp-44bhp gas engine with a ten-speed transmission. The tractor is painted in the correct livery of bronze-coloured engine, red chassis and panels and straw wheel rims with red centres. Simon drove…

A FOWLER CORRECTION Dear Editor The engine which is referred to in Michael Perrins’ letter in the March issue as having the wood-block wheels wasn’t Fowler No. 17105, it was No. 12226 of 1911 [HL 930] which was used by boiler makers Spurr Inmann of Wakefield. This was brought into preservation by Arthur Fearnley of Castleford in 1962 and was driven back from the Wakefield scrapyard where it was at the time on those wood block wheels to the yard at Castleford. Gerry Proctor bought the engine in 1975 and his auction sale later took place at Grewelthorpe, near Masham, in 1986 after he’d moved from Nidd Bridge. A later owner, who I believe to be Allan Marchington, replaced the wooden blocks with the more conventional rubber tyres since I…

A Fowler roller in Australia was seen on an internet site a little while ago. Enquiries revealed that it was located in an artist’s colony near Eltham in the state of Victoria and was initially with the Country Roads Board. Following this, it passed to Heidelberg City Council before ending up in 1966 at this property when the original owner of the site purchased it. Despite regular attempts by various interested people to buy it, or offer to restore it, these have never been taken up and it’s been deteriorating there ever since.…

Whilst holidaying in Florida earlier this year, Andrew Johnson called in at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum close to Miami. This was founded in 1957 and was built on the site of the former Naval Air Station at Richmond which was the second largest WWII airship base in the United States. With over three miles of tracks, this location was an ideal place to construct a railroad museum. There are many railway exhibits on show, including steam and diesel locomotives and carriages, as well as freight wagons plus many artefacts etc. There is also a 2ft narrow gauge railway - the East Swamp & Gatorville Railroad-on which it’s possible to ride as well. As mentioned in the last issue, my report was restricted to the Hornsby Akroyd engines says Patrick Knight. These were exhibited at the Stationary Engine Gathering at Breamore Country Museum, near Fordingbridge, Hampshire, over the weekend of the 13-14 July. Here we look at just some of the other makes that attended. I do not know how far I actually walked, but more than I would have done in a day at a regular engine rally, nor indeed would I have spoken to so many engine enthusiasts about their engines, many of whom had travelled great distances to exhibit at this great event. After much controversy, finally the Brockenhurst Agricultural College Collection (Trent University) came under the hammer and featured most of the line of engines at the summer Cheffins Vintage Collective Sale on Saturday 20th July says Peter Love. This collection of engines and equipment from Nottinghamshire has been the talk in the county for the last two years, after it had been finally decided to disperse the collection as not being relevant to what the University is all about today. A number of collectors were offered its contents, but turned it down. We do not see many small Tangye oil engines out on our rally fields, it was therefore a delight to see the Tangye model AA owned by J.L. Milestone being exhibited at the Breamore Country Museum Stationary Engine Special Weekend says Patrick Knight. The information that accompanied the engine stated that it has been tested at the Tangye Brothers Works on 21st October 1920, after which it is believed to have been exported to Australia. Unfortunately it is not known where the engine ended up, or indeed what it was used for. It was subsequently repatriated to the UK for preservation. The current owner purchased the engine from a fellow enthusiast in 2018. Introduced in circa 1908 Tangye AA engines were built in 13 sizes from the tiny 1¾ bhp…

Seen on a wet and soggy Saturday at the Hellingly Festival of Transport was this so-original 1943 Ferguson 2N No. 117173. The Peterborough Motors-supplied tractor has all the correct features from when the 2N was first introduced as a utility tractor as materials were very, very short at this time due to WW2. Gone was the coil ignition, from 1942 it was magneto ignition, steel wheels, no starter motor and so on. It was purchased by Tom Fellows who says that dad Graham had the manifold off and skimmed for straightness, and that stopped the exhaust blow, with a new manifold gasket fitted of course. Massey Ferguson, with a history dating back 177 years, is set to make waves at this year’s Newark Vintage Tractor and Heritage Show on 9-10 November. Celebrating 60 years of the iconic ‘Red Giants’ 100 series, the show, co-supported by Friends of Ferguson Heritage (FOFH), will host a record attempt for the largest gathering of the legendary 135 model. “It’s an important series of tractors for Massey Ferguson,” says Peter Lawrence, chair of Friends of Ferguson Heritage. “Not only did it look very different with its American-inspired flat panelling, but it was their first series of tractors to be fitted with direct injection engines. In mid-2022, information emerged about a John Fowler steam roller in Patna, some 600 miles (approx. 1000km) to the south-east of Delhi. These details came from a working professional and heritage connoisseur, Kunal Dutt, who was born in Patna but currently works in New Delhi. This knowledge was shared on social media and at that time the roller was in the custodianship of the local District Board authorities. They had written to the Bihar government asking for the immediate removal of this roller and other antique artefacts from the Patna Collectorate campus to the premises of the old Patna Museum. Suur Toll is the largest pre-WW1 preserved steam-powered ice breaker in the world and these days is moored in the historic seaplane harbour at the Estonian Maritime Museum in Tallinn, writes Phil Barnes. Turning the clock back, the vessel was ordered by the Imperial Russian Government in 1912 and its construction was awarded to the Stettiner Maschinenbau AG Vulcan yard in Stettin, Germany-today this is Szczecin in Poland. Suur Toll was launched in December 1913 and was initially named after the Tzar Mikhail Feodorovich; however, following the 1917 Russian Revolution, she was ‘acquired’ by the Bolsheviks and renamed Volynets. In 1918 Volynets was captured by the Finns and named Wäinämöinen and they used her until 1922 when she was handed over to the Estonians in accordance with the Treaty of…

BIG BUCKS IN REPUBLIC OF IRELAND On Wednesday 31July auctioneers H J Pugh & Co (Ireland) Ltd conducted the dispersal sale of the Phil Breen Private Collection of vintage and classic tractors, stationary engines, enamel signs, cast iron seats, motorcycles and other collectables at Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland. There was an excellent crowd in attendance and the prices achieved were good. The list of stationary engines in the catalogue totalled around sixty, so there was something for most tastes, from the humble Lister D type through to a couple of Hornsby lamp-start engines which sold for £8,447-€10,000 and £12,670.50-€15,500. Other engines of interest included an air-cooled Amanco at £760-€900, 4hp Amanco at £422-€500 and an 8hp Amanco; which was something very few enthusiasts have encountered; it sold for £3,379-€4,000. On Saturday 20th July, auctioneers Kivells held the Mr and Mrs J & A Dixon sale at The Parks, Ashbury, Oakhampton, which featured 146 stationary engines in the 1400 + lots that came up for sale. All the well-known makes were to be seen as well as makes like Waterloo and Amanco. Some sold for £2, others from £5 up to £820, then up to £2,800 for a Ruston & Hornsby Class H, No. 17150, and finally to £6,300 for Blackstone, No.161956, in fully-restored running condition.…

It’s the evening of Sunday 22 September; I’m just trying to dry myself off after returning from a very wet Brian Knight Great Casterton Working. It’s certainly the best place in the UK to see working steam and early, over 100-year-old, tractors in action-even the 1903 Ivel was there courtesy of Robert Crawford. Besides this there were some wonderful early stationary engines working as well. The weather was good on Saturday afternoon, but that changed just after 4pm when the heavens opened and the weather deteriorated. It was no better on Sunday when I arrived at 9.15am. The Berwick St John Country Fayre has been running every other year since 1992, this charity event has raised over £310,000 for the children’s Stars Appeal at Salisbury District Hospital. The committee, section leaders and exhibitors created a great welcome with a wide variety of full-size steam, miniature steam, tractors, vintage and classic plant and commercial entries. This was appreciated considering the heavy rain showers during the build-up to the Fayre. There were static displays, steam traction engine trailer rides, plus a tractor parade in the main ring. Additional interest was created by the steam ploughing engines, heavy horse area, wood sawing and thrashing demonstrations, along with the Southern Counties Auctioneers sale held on Saturday, which unfortunately was not online, however our full report will be in next month’s issue.…

Now with the Ingall family near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, 1911 Burrell 8hp DCC showman’s No. 3334 The Bailie is making great strides into a new life. Old Glory was kindly invited to inspect progress on this ex-Robinson engine, which always stood out from the crowd in their ownership. The engine was new to George Green of Gallowgate, Glasgow, who had three Burrells new. Then after WW1 Green stopped travelling and it went to H Bradley of Glasgow and in 1931 to the Silcock Brothers, Warrington, Lancashire who used it until 1945. Don Robinson did a wonderful job with this engine which was the pride of Lincolnshire for many decades travelling with Dorothy Robinson’s 89-key Gavioli. It was great to see Robert Coles out with his 1910 Marshall 3hp slide-valve portable No. 70595 in such good form at the Breamore House event on 13-14 July. The Marshall, originally supplied to New South Wales, Australia, was driving the original Hindley steam engine which was making its debut here. Further on the field was the ex-Narromine, New South Wales Blackstone oil engine No. 95941 all in original condition. Thanks to Robert’s associates it was running here in public for the first time and it was great to see these fine machines out and running well.…

Seen at Biddenden Tractorfest on Saturday 17 August, this 1975 Kharkiv XT3 T-74 tractor was made at the Zavod tractor works, Ukraine. It is owned by Simon Chaplin from near Cranbook in Kent. Some 880,000 of these crawlers were made 1962-84 and they carry the traditional Soviet four-cylinder 6-litre 75hp engine with the typical two-stroke petrol donkey start engine. This is similar to the Belarus crawlers that were imported into the UK in the late 60-70s. After 1991 the crawler, with a track design that goes back to the WW2 Russian T34 tank, passed to private ownership after Ukrainian independence. KESS In 1/43 scale from Italian-based resin model manufacturer Kess Models is a 1954 Chevrolet National Ambulance of Royal Oak Michigan Fire Protection in red [1]. The same model has also been produced in white in Maple Leaf livery, based upon a real, preserved vehicle. Price of each is £111.99. These were based on Chevrolet’s three-door sedan delivery van, sent to National Body Manufacturing in Knightstown, Indiana for conversion into ambulances, who also produced hearses and limousines. The model is a standard wheelbase vehicle, but some were extended by National, adding extra doors. MATRIX Dutch-based resin model car manufacturer Matrix Models have produced a 1/43 scale 1952 Mercedes-Benz 220 Lieferwagen (delivery truck) bodied by German coachbuilder Autenrieth [2]. A lifelong steam and fairground fan, my idea as a teenager has finally come to fruition in retirement! Lincolnshire born and bred, telling the story of Foster fairground engines is arguably part of my steam-related heritage. Research began in the mid-1970s but was set aside when I moved away to build a career. Yet the idea was not forgotten, and in the late 1980/1990s I corresponded with enthusiasts such as Alan Duke, Reg Smith, Rowland Scott, Phillip Bradley and more. All generously shared invaluable experiences and insights at a time when their memories were sent in hand-written letters (of up to 30 pages or more!), and copying photographs required access to a darkroom. The collection of Stefan Mattes has featured in the magazine previously in OGs 262 and 353, writes Ambros Saladin. Stefan, who lives at Ostrach in the state of Baden-Württemberg in south-west Germany-which borders France and Switzerland-has recently acquired two steam rollers from the latter country, the first being Aveling & Porter No. 6308 of 1907. This roller originally worked for the Municipality of St-Imier in Bern Canton as its Fleet No 1. At the conclusion of its commercial life it was sold to a scrap dealer in 1964 and was then to be found in a private museum at Bülach in the Canton of Zürich from where it came to Germany in 2022 following the death of its then owner. INTRODUCTION 2024 has certainly been a bumper year for vintage equipment auction sales; with stationary engines of all makes and models selling for prices much higher than I, and a number of friends, had anticipated. In addition to the usual ‘run of the mill’ engines, the types that one can find at virtually any auction sale in the UK, the two major auction houses, Cheffins of Cambridgeshire and H J Pugh of Hereford, sold a number of what one might call ‘top-end’ engines. These included a Blackstone vertical hot-bulb at £18,100, a Blackstone portable hot-bulb at £17,000; a couple of Hornsby hot-bulb engines at £10,000 a piece and a third at £15,400, while a Hornsby Akroyd engine, in need of a little work, made £15,000. On Saturday 5 October the late Chris Leeder sale took place at Long Stratton, Norfolk. Due to the construction of the Long Stratton bypass, it wasn’t easy to get to the site, owing to the narrow roads around the area. The star for us was the Oct 1930 Crossley of Manchester HD9 32bhp single-cylinder diesel stationary engine, No.128566 with its 6ft flywheel. There was a range of original paperwork including the certificate of test, manuals, various receipts, instruction book etc. The injector had been reconditioned but not fitted. Supplied new to Basil Leeder of Long Stratton Mill, it was mounted on a steel bed, but was sold in situ and is to be removed at the purchaser’s expense. As we have just reviewed an Irish stationary engine sale, here is an engine that was supplied to Belfast before WW1 and the separation of Ireland. This neat little American-built engine was manufactured by Nelson Brothers (contract engine builders of Lansing, Michigan, USA) and supplied to dealers Ernest Wilson of 99 Cromat Street, Belfast, circa 1912/13. Members of the Sussex & Kent Weald Stationary Engine Group were in attendance at the Southern Counties Preservation Trust Show, over the weekend of 20-21 July, 2024 say Alan and Lynne Cullen. There were some 18 engines on display, alongside other classes of vintage exhibits. Philip Sampson was showing a 9-12hp French-built Bernard Moteurs engine which dates from 1923. Alongside him was his son Rowan with a 1927 Lister D type and water pump. YES ITS HERE! An amazing sight! On Friday 4 October in steam for the first time since possibly1955 is 1951 Sentinel ST6 No. 9510 (no worksplate). It’s one of an order of 100 supplied to the Argentine Coal Board for service in the southern part of this vast country between the mines at Rio Turbio to Rio Gallegos (a distance of 150 miles), starting in 1950. But for whatever reason this example was not used in this process which only lasted five years. The ST6 is in like new condition and was kept under cover for decades before ending up in a zoo.
