The British Motor Museum is delighted to announce that it has secured a further £225,000 per annum from the Arts Council for the period 2023-2026 as a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO). Arts Council England are boosting spending in arts, museums and libraries in villages, towns and cities where investment is currently low. The Museum is one of 990 National Portfolio and Investment Principles Support Organisations who will share the £446m a year investment. The funding will support activities and development work at the Museum through its exhibitions and programmes. The themes the Museum will be exploring will include the development of alternative solutions for the car and mobility, the process of design and the personal responses it evokes, and the relationship between cars and music - both of which are…

The steam world is mourning Scots actor Robbie Coltrane who died, age 72, on 14 October, after a career which saw him achieve fame in roles such as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films and ITV’s Cracker, in which he played a forensic psychologist Away from stage and television, Coltrane was passionate about steam on both rail and on the water, and greatly supported the repatriation of North British Railway Company-built, South African Railways class 15f 4-8-2 to Glasgow by backing the appeal to bring the locomotive home. The actor posed for pictures in front of the engine, along with fellow-supporter TV personality, Carol Smilie, when it went on public exhibition in the city’s George Square in August 2002, before being prepared for display in the Riverside Museum when it…

Derek Rayner reports that it was an absolute joy to attend the Road Roller Association’s Annual General Meeting in early October at Gillingham since the weather was exceptionally kind and favoured the weekend’s activities with ‘wall-to-wall’ sunshine. Saturday morning saw the group visiting member Robert Deards’s motor roller collection near Hoo St Werburgh when, in addition to him very kindly allowing members to drive one or two of his restored motor rollers, he also provided the ability to look on board a steam tug - TID172 - complete with all its original equipment. In addition to which, the extremely well-restored Thames sailing barge Marjorie dating from 1902, also berthed there, was available for inspection if required. OXFORD DIECAST Oxford Diecast re-wrapped their 1/76 scale Aveling & Porter road roller and tar spreader, No. 11520 Crusader, in Great Dorset Steam Fair special packaging as the show model for 2022 [1]. Price is £26.95. The model first appeared in 2020 in the same colours, the light green and black of Robert Bate of Wolverhampton with the matching Coleman Flapper tar spreader. We’ll have to wait until 2024 for the next GDSF model I suppose. In the meantime, Oxford have issued their 1/76 Fowler B6 road locomotive in the original black livery of haulage company Norman E Box Ltd of Manchester, No. 16263 Talisman [2]. RRP is £19.95. Dear Editor I note that your A - Z deals only with steam vehicle builders, but I wonder whether in future you might extend the list to include stationary engine builders? If so I offer for consideration under letter B the firm of Barker & Cope of Kidsgrove. I don’t have much information on them, they were founded before 1860 but their works at the Union Foundry in Kidsgrove was put up for sale after the death of George Barker in a colliery accident in 1878. One of their large engines survives. This is a two-cylinder horizontal (34in x 6in) winding engine built in 1875, at the Hetty pit near Pontypridd. It has been restored to working order, though only on compressed air, and will next be working on Saturday…

I never used to be into the steam world, but from a very young age I’ve been interested in anything mechanical. If I could get my hands on tools and something to dismantle or build I’d be well away. My father and uncle used to always be rebuilding a car or van in the barn. Or dad would be fixing something in the workshop. As time went by, when I was old enough I was brought a train set, and this led to exhibiting with another uncle who had a keen interest in railways. The company started as a brass and iron foundry as the Spittlegate Ironworks, Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1815. Richard died in 1864 and had been joined by his three sons, Richard II, James and William. Out of the second generation children only James’ son Richard III was part of the day-to-day running of the company along with J A Hornsby. Hornsby went on to make the most successful early steam portable in the world, starting in 1849, with the steam chamber over the firebox containing the cylinder all as one. It was exported all over the world and they entered the traction engine market in 1863 with a not very exciting undertype. It would be in 1880 when they came up with a more conventional design with the characteristic front axle…

Georgetown, Colorado, is famous for its narrow gauge (3ft) loop railroad, advises Kevin Hoggett. Until relatively recently there were a number of Shay-type logging locomotives working trains on the line but it seems there was a major disagreement with the operator a few years ago and the owners left and took their unusual locos with them. The new operator however has two 2-8-0 tender engines which work the line and which came from the International Railways of Central America - plus a 2-6-2 tender loco from elsewhere. On the occasion of the visit to the line, the two 2-8-0 locos were in steam, both in excellent condition. In early November I was in Nottinghamshire, where I was able to visit the director of the Nottingham Industrial Museum Chris Lilliman, along with his volunteers at Wollarton Park. They have taken over from the Arkwright Society, who pulled out of here for many reasons, after doing a good job for years. Under the new set-up there are over 60 volunteers and the team has just signed a new lease to keep this excellent museum, and its many steam and more relics from Nottinghamshire’s heritage, going for some years…

A ‘secret’ mothballed collection of eight classic Caterpillars with less than 70 hours on any of them has changed hands in the south-east in the latter half of October 2022, and has been purchased by the ever-affable Kentish Mark Hellier, a dealer/collector of some repute world-wide. These eight 1980s classics were bought to be used in a groundwork/pipe-laying business but only two of the machines were ever used and they were all eventually mothballed until now! They all run and look as good as they were when new in 1983. They include a brand-new Caterpillar D8K which carries the later modifications to the engine, turbo, oil coolers, etc and is an amazing throwback to what this tracklayer was like when new. Brian Johnson writes that a link with the early days of engine preservation was severed in August with the passing of Derek Kilburn. Born in 1931 with a steam engineer father and apprenticed into an engineering firm, he had first-hand experience of working steam. He soon became involved with others in Sussex in retaining engines. He owned Wallis & Steevens tractor No. 7637 and Burrell No. 3057 Lord Roberts in the early fifties, rallying the tractor at some of the earliest, mid-fifties, traction engine rallies. Later he returned Marshall tractor No. 73900 to its tractor form and show livery as built in 1920. This appeared widely in the south over twenty years. Also he had retained Burrell traction engine No. 4019 Britannia that had been modified in early preservation days…

The famous 1976 Foden S80 artic JJL357P, which has never looked better than while in Jamie Croft’s ownership in East Sussex, has recently changed hands to a collector in the Southampton area. The artic unit was new to Glossops of Tonbridge and was used to move many steam vehicles in its time, including Sentinel DG4 No.8666 tar sprayer and Les Warren’s 1922 Aveling & Porter 8 ton ex-Eddison road roller to many shows over the years before falling into disrepair as time went on. Dear Editor On a fairly recent motorhome trip around our British island my wife and myself were out stretching our legs when I stumbled upon what I thought at first was a living van. On closer inspection it was revealed as an old garden-type shed that someone had mounted on a traction wagon. I had a good poke around and it is in a fairly good condition considering its location, which I won’t reveal at the moment, so I duly took photographs. It is complete to even having the drawbar stored underneath on its correct mounts. I made enquiries as to its ownership and if it was available to buy. BUFFAUD The Buffaud brothers were engineers in Lyon, France as early as 1830 who became steam specialists as well as making dying and drying machines for the cloth trade. In 1879 the business was renamed Buffaud & Robatel and became well-known for electric motors, but stationary steam engines continued and from 1893 the firm supplied engines and boilers for Scotte’s roadtrains. They seem also to have been involved with Serpollet and from about 1900 listed their own steam, petrol and no doubt electric automobiles. This carried on to about 1910 but seems to have been limited to local customers for the firm’s other equipment. Nicolas Joseph Cugnot was born in Void-Vacon, Lorraine, Meuse in north-east France in February 1725. He trained as a military engineer and was a captain in the French army and had fought in the Seven Years War (1756-63) in the Austrian Army. Along his travels he saw the need to move heavy artillery in a better way than a heavy horse and wagon of the time which struggled to cope in most cases. He was commissioned by the French War Ministry under the Duke of Choiseul and was encouraged by General Gribeauval to create a steam-powered wagon for heavy armaments transportation. On Saturday 30 October the Rural Past Times committee met at Mountfield Village Hall at 12 noon for a road run and charity presentation from their Horns Cross Rally in August 2022, before mothballing their machinery for the winter. Over 100 people took part in the road run on 35 tractors and commercial vehicles with Austin Hawkins' Scammell Pioneer in its WW2 North Africa campaign colours bringing brightness to the occasion. The entourage travelled some 28 miles around Bodiam, past the KESR Bodiam station and on to the Eastwood farm industrial estate (the former Guinness hop farm) before making their way back to Mountfield. Dear Editor I am researching into the building of Royal Holloway College at Egham, Surrey, 1879-86, a substantial building for the period. The bricks and material used in the construction were transported from Egham railway station to the site, about 1½ miles, the last ½ mile being over a gradual incline up Egham Hill. A Court case, brought by the Highways Committee in 1880 citing damage to the roadway caused by this activity, reveals that up to three 25 cwt waggons were driven to the construction site by a traction engine owned by Lewis & Clift, up to six times a day, over a period of three months.…

Saturday 9 July, at 3.30pm, 1907 Burrell 7nhp showman’s road locomotive No. 2879 - the final stages of a complete restoration only finished that morning - was unloaded from a lorry trailer and steamed directly into the display arena to lead the cavalcade of steam engines at the 47th Historic Vehicle Gathering at Powderham Castle, Kenton, near Exeter. It could not have been a more dramatic arrival. Following off the same lorry trailer was a second engine making a post restoration debut, although not entirely finished the midnight oil had been burned to get 1913 Garrett 4CD tractor No. 31210 Wallace sufficiently finished to attend the gathering. The 71st National Ploughing Championship took place on the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s vast Chatsworth Estate at Glapwell in north-east Derbyshire, just down the road from a former colliery. The weather was not good on Friday afternoon as heavy rain descended on the fields, it was a godsend to all who were ploughing, but made a mess of the entrances to the field to be used. However the fields had an excellent road system around them that helped matters. On the actual days of the event it was wall-to-wall sunshine for most of the time with a larger crowd seen on the Sunday of the match. A Scandinavian reader, Wolf Clarke, has very kindly sent a couple of photos of an unusual ‘combined engine’ which he discovered at the Derome Timber & Nostalgia Museum in Derome in Halland County - over 100 miles north of Malmö. This consisted of a Swedish-built Munktells boiler No. 4032 (not in ETER-2015!) dating from 1908 combined with a NOHAB ex-winch-type engine, from 1906 which had been mounted on top of the boiler. The timber museum also have their own photos on its web-site, www.derometramuseum.se Wolf recalled seeing a similar ‘combined engine’ a few years ago in the town of Linköping and he wondered whether this one might have been previously recorded in ETER-2015 as Munktells No. 2824 which is shown as being located in or close to that town.
