It was certainly a wonderful feeling to be back at the Great Dorset Steam Fair in 2022. Although there were no special section features as such, there was one that actually featured the four Super Lion class Fowler showman’s engines that were together for the very first time - this was by far the highlight of the 2022 show. The engine was scheduled to make it’s debut at the Hollycombe event that weekend, but the event was cancelled due to the fire risk, so instead it made it’s first move at it’s Kent base. It’s officially been going on since 2007, but Tractor Fest hasn’t been able to take place since 2019, but now it’s certainly taken on a new lease of life. Held over the Platinum Jubilee weekend of 3-5 June at Newby Hall, not far from the cathedral city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, the event lived up to its name and produced possibly the largest collection of preserved tractors that will be seen together in 2022, with nearly 900 on show of all types and sizes and from Kent to Aberdeenshire. Not only that, on show were over 300 quality stationary engines and a bumper number of trucks of all ages. Added to that were an eclectic collection of cars featuring many Austin 7s, bygone stands and the best selection of trade…

During 2020, David decided that he wanted to purchase another engine and discussed this with his family which, by then, included two very competent engine crew - daughters Hayley and Sophy. He wanted something which was not ‘main-stream’ - a road loco, perhaps and because of the engine the family already had, possibly a Fowler - but it had to be somewhat unusual and different. As has been the case for decades, Strumpshaw is a place that miniature modellers like to attend and it was just that in 2022 when no less than 66 were entered in the excellent programme. Miniatures were everywhere! David Etheridge and Dick Barker ran the miniatures section of the very warm Platinum Jubilee Strumpshaw Steam Rally on 2-5 June. There was such a choice of engines to enjoy here chugging about around the site, especially when they paraded at 1pm each day of the show. There were a raft of sizes here and amazingly including some over 20 6in engines based on Allchin, Burrell, Foden, Fowler, Garrett, Marshall, Ruston Proctor, Savage and Tasker engines. BOGHOS PACHA NUBAR This unusual name belonged to a middle-aged Egyptian cotton baron who had received engineering training in Paris. He devised a rotary cultivator that was patented in 1897 and came to France to get it built. The first was powered by electricity and the second was attached to a Fowler in 1900 with a separate steam engine to power triple overlapping rotors behind the tender. Typically the rotors ran at 20rpm and cultivated to a depth of 20cm. It appeared that Monsieur Boghos Pacha Nubar was a director of an Egyptian railway company so plainly had steam in his veins, though his next cultivator featured a hot bulb oil engine. The editor says: I was at the Hellingly Festival of Transport, in, I think 1989, when in his white overalls the late John Naylor, who sadly died from covid in 2021, told me that his ex-Martin Saunders, ex-New Zealand/Australian 1909 Burrell No. 3131 8hp, a compound export double geared, sprung traction engine, was making its last appearance before he took it off the road. He had previously sold 1915 Burrell No. 3655 6hp double-crank compound traction engine FU822 English Hero in approximately 1988 to former Maidstone Zoo keeper, the late ‘Smudger’ Smith, who converted it into a showman’s engine, which it still is today. John told me he was going to develop No. 3131 into a very special Burrell showman’s engine. Sadly he would not see the engine finished after…

Thanks to Allen Eaton’s efforts the famous Hollowell rally, which he created in the first place, was back on the calendar and held over the first weekend in July to raise £1000s for local Northamptonshire charities. Undoubtedly the star was the long-awaited debut of Richard Poole’s superb restoration of 1901 Allchin No. 1187 single-cylinder 10 ton road roller NH3417. The engine was No. 2 in the Northampton Corporation fleet before ending up with G Mabbutt & Sons who rallied it extensively for many years. Richard has carried out the major boiler work himself and has authentically painted the engine in the correct livery as it would have been when new. He was given an export license by the Australian Government who were well satisfied with all the research Tom had done regarding other Allchins in Australia today and remembering its wrecked condition. The engine had been shipped from Northampton to Smellie & Co of Brisbane who were the agents for this make - they sold at least 33 engines including Allchin steam wagons to Australia over the years. The engine was a total wreck when it arrived and has been a challenge and a half to see finished and in steam, but it’s now done! The boiler work was completed in Wales, with a new barrel, tombstone backhead, boiler, tubeplate, tender and so much more, particularly motion, fittings, flywheel, gears and one could go on and on. Fresh off the back of the Amberley Museum’s July Steam show the opportunity was taken by Timeline Events to hold a photographic day with some of the engines that participated in the weekend’s rally, writes Simon Colbeck. The superb collection of transport-related buildings at the museum provided a perfect backdrop for the seven participating road steam exhibits. Situated in the beautiful South Downs countryside in south-east England the museum is located within the former Amberley chalk quarry. Historically an important source of lime for mortar and agricultural uses, Amberley had its own kilns, the remains of which can be seen today in the museum grounds. In addition to the road steam exhibits the Museum’s 2ft gauge railway was in operation and featured a return to steam of Bagnall No. 2067…

Held at Patrick Edwards’ Langley Farm site, so famous for the autojumbles staged here, this show just gets bigger and bigger. We visited the show on the first day when the site had brilliant sunshine, approximately 300 entries of all different types were seen with a fine selection of miniatures and a good display of models in the tent and nearby, many with a fairground tone about them. As we said, it was worth spending the petrol to come here just see Jeff Shacklell’s latest 2021 creation. Jeff said he admired the Chris Lord-designed 6in Burrell Devonshire and as none of these were available he had his own example built by Dave Tucker and painted to perfection by Adam Meridith. The years 1919-20 were good for the company, however prices came tumbling down as the mass produced and cheaper 1917 Fordson MOM and F took hold across the world, particularly in the early 1920s. In the USA and also in Europe to stay competitive with the Detroit and Irish-built ‘F menace’ a Hamilton plough was part of the heavily discounted IHC Titan package, of which remarkably 78,363 had been built when production finally finished in 1922. It has to be said the IHC range by then was rather old-fashioned if you compare a Titan 10-20 against the unit-construction F. The Fordson F was certainly a phenomenon, responsible for the demise of so many agricultural and steam manufacturers, but not IHC which had many different facets and was there to stay.…

Well, it’s time to write my editorial again and it’s hot, hot, hot out there! However, we do have a 15mph breeze blowing across the fields here, which is keeping the heat in my office in check, for a little while anyway. I am writing this in the middle of August, not long after the Woodchurch Steam & Vintage Vehicle rally, which saw at least five steam debuts. I greatly enjoyed driving one of my Allard cars the 31 miles to the show early in the morning and everything went well there and back, even though the electric fan was running well and truly on the return journey, their flathead V-8 engines do run very hot, a trait of the make. Back on its normal weekend, Bill Giles' Weald of Kent Traction Engine Rally at Woodchurch, Kent was to be a big hit over 6-7 August with just over 30 full-size engines and a bumper crop of miniatures, along with a record entry of tractors, cars and commercials making this a great event to stretch your legs either side of the grass runway here. As always a bumper crowd was in attendance. However the major feature here was the number of debuts at the show. Without doubt the star was the debut of Will Day’s on-going saga with Alley & MacLellan (Sentinel) 1907 No.190 steam wagon, the oldest survivor of the breed by far. The Hetton Colliery Railway in Co Durham was opened in 1822, designed and built by George Stephenson. It was the first railway in the world to be conceived and designed to be fully steam-powered from its inception, reports Howard Stafford. The line was built to haul coal from the newly-sunk Hetton Lyons Colliery to the purpose-built staithes on the River Wear about nine miles away at Sunderland, from where the coal was shipped all over the world - although mainly to the developing industrial capital city of London. It was locomotive-powered for part of the line and rope-hauled over steeper parts, using a series of static steam-powered engines. This event takes place on the site of the Strumpshaw Steam Museum, just outside Norwich. The museum has varied exhibits as well as steam machines: major fairground rides, a raft of Field Marshall tractors, pumping engines, even a historically important Cagney 4-4-0 miniature railway locomotive, and is well worth a visit. The site was packed with just about everything, especially punters, over 2-5 June; the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday of course. The Norfolk Steam Engine Club was formed in 1959 and held annual rallies at Woodton Old Hall before moving to Strumpshaw in 1970, continuing to 1992. WJ King started in business in 1905 as a threshing contractor at Bishops Lydeard, Somerset. The business grew and by the 1920s they were into road making and quarrying, as well as threshing, they also owned a farm and three quarries in the local area. In fact, Kings went on to own six quarries over the years, but not all during the steam era and his last steam relicts, many very derelict, were sold off in May 1988 and many grace our rally fields today.…

It was great to see such an excellent selection of steam miniatures at the 44th Stradsett Park Vintage Rally sponsored by Supreme Windows and staged by Gordon Carson and his NVTEC East Anglia committee near Downham Market, Norfolk. After all the good weather leading up to the May bank holiday weekend, by 1-2 May it was rather a let-down to say the least. Nevertheless the expected light rain on Sunday 1 May didn’t really come at Stradsett and by mid-afternoon the sun came out. It was reflected in this great event as the miniatures paraded on this fine site belonging to Alfred Bagge and family. Bucyrus-Erie 684-WX In 1962 a major contract was awarded to a consortium of contractors headed by Morrison-Knudsen Co. Inc. for construction of the San Luis Dam in California. This involved movement of over 80 million cubic yards of material over a long distance. An engineering study revealed that a bucket wheel excavator capable of moving up to 4,500 cubic yards per hour would be the most economical method. An order was immediately placed with Bucyrus-Erie Company for such a machine, and the 684-WX was designed, manufactured and delivered to the site in just 15 months! Starting work in 1964, the 812-ton machine was designed to load a large fleet of 100-ton bottom-dump Euclid tractor-trailer haulers.
