Donegal’s remotest railway station is up for sale at offers over Euro 299,000. Cashelangor Station, on the former 3ft gauge Letterkenny & Burtonport Extension Railway, has been put on the market by its current owners Jacqueline and Gavin Kelly, who bought the then-derelict building in 2017, sensitively restored it to showcase its railway heritage and opened it as self-catering holiday accommodation. The historic three-bedroom station house, which comes with a self-contained flat within the former waiting room and ticket office, was built in 1902 for the opening of the line which saw trains run through the station between Falcarragh and Gweedore from opening in 1903 up to closure in 1947. With the lockdown restrictions changing in the spring of 2021 engine owners have been taking to the roads to get their fix of steam and to allow their engines the chance to stretch their legs after an even longer than normal winter break. Fresh with new annual steam inspection tickets a handful of Dorset-based engines headed out on 26 April for such a run including a couple of watering stops for both engines and crews, reports Paul Ritchie. The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway reopened on 1 May and featured Bagnall 0-6-0ST Empress on the trains whilst Dave Nash’s Marshall road roller No. 78563 of 1924, which is based on site at Furnace Sidings, was in steam and on display. The Chasewater Railway at Brownhills, West Midlands, reopened over the weekend of 22-23 May with diesel operation on the Saturday and steam on the Sunday in the form of 0-6-0ST Hollybank No. 3. This was its first day hauling trains since 2016 after the completion of a four-year overhaul. At the Leighton Buzzard Railway, trains ran again on 22-23 May on an enhanced service as the start of the first phase of the railway’s main season seeing trains running on every Sunday up until July 11, and completed extra…

INTRODUCTION TO THE L TYPE GARDNER ENGINE Gardner’s pioneering work with this high speed direct injection engine would, in 1930, lead into a market which had never been envisaged. The prototype 4L2, exhibited at the 1929 Shipping Engineering & Machinery Exhibition introduced the design to the world and very quickly proved the high-speed oil engine to be a viable power unit for road transport. The L2 range had been aimed at Gardner’s traditional markets for marine propulsion, marine auxillary and stationary applications. One person to view the engine at the show was Mr T H Barton, a Nottingham bus operator. With considerable foresight, he recongnised the potential for these engines as a power unit for road vehicles. By trawling the internet and with the appropriate search terms, it’s still possible to discover rollers in Germany and elsewhere that have not been previously found. One such came to light when David Parfitt, the co-author of The European Traction Engine Register - 2015 was investigating various aspects online during the recent lockdown. The pictured example is no longer a ‘steam’ roller - it’s a Ruthemeyer ‘diesel conversion’ which is fitted with the somewhat unusual overhead steering arrangement which was a feature of the firm’s later build of rollers. It should be remembered, of course, that this was the same company which constructed the Wallis & Steevens ‘look-a-like’ steam rollers from the late 1920s onwards which were equipped with a very similar style of steering. Well here we are again! As I write this in early June, regarding events, we still don’t really know where we stand, now that Indian Covid variant has reared its head and two major events that were on, are now off. Firstly Slaidburn in Lancashire has been cancelled over 26-27 June due to, we are told local residents being unhappy with others coming into the area and possibly bringing Covid with them. With this in mind the organiser has cancelled his 40th event. Let’s hope it goes ahead next year. The other is the Weeting Rally on 16-19 July. I have spoken to the organiser who says volunteers are not as forthcoming as in the past. Also not many engines are certificated just for the very few events in East…

OG contributor Martyn Williams sends us the disappointing news that his Ruston Bucyrus 10 RB has been vandalised. The machine has now been moved to a more secure location. Martyn had waited over 50 years to own one then this happens! But he has some great friends in the plant trade who have helped out. New windows will have been fitted by now As an update, Martyn says it seems like some of the culprits have been caught. He had to clear broken glass from the drum area, remove side window and tape up the windscreen. It cost around £200 to repair the damage. The vandals smashed all the windows on a Case 580, a small rail wagon shunter and some windows on carriages.…

The DVLA say if you’re 70 or over, or will be 70 in the next 90 days, you can renew your licence for free. It may take longer than usual for you to get your licence because of coronavirus. If your licence expired between 1 February and 31 December 2020, your driving licence or entitlement to drive in the UK was automatically extended for 11 months. This is because of (COVID-19). The extension started from the date your licence was due to expire. You will not get a new licence as part of the automatic extension. You’ll only get a new licence when you renew it. So after the 2019 season we were all busy filling in forms and eagerly awaiting the responses for the 2020 rally season…… then this ‘ere pandemic hit, which put paid to most rallies during 2020 and has wiped many from our 2021 calendar also. So myself, Ashley Bye and Sophie Gibbs made the BIG decision to host an ‘Exhibitors’ Rally,’ aimed at exhibitors with the possible arrival of a few members of the general public over the weekend of 10 and 11 July. Exhibitors can arrive from 3pm on Thursday 8 July and leave Monday 12 July, at Good Mondays Farm, Dauntsey, Wiltshire, SN15 4HL. The founder of Automower, George Grist, first set up his business in 1913. He was an avid mechanic of the day, mending and building all types of machinery, including a motorised shooting brake for his uncle’s butchery business. His first premises were a garage on Bell Hill, Norton St Phillip, now known as Catholic Hall. Between the years 1913-17 the mainstay of the business was in building private house lighting and pumping plants of which they installed many. These were powered by Pelepon engines. In 1917 George Grist was called up for war service and did not return to civilian life till 1920. Harry Andrews, my grandad, was born in Hull on 27 November 1936. At the age of three, war had been declared on Germany and with Hull being a major port, many children were evacuated. Harry and his older sister were evacuated to Hatfield Woodhouse near Doncaster, where they lived in a house next to a farm. It was here where his passion for steam began when he saw his first traction engine driving a threshing machine. He was amazed by the engine, yet he was ordered to stay away from it, and beat the mice and rats from the haystack with a stick. After the war, Harry returned home to Hull. The Archivist to the DampfwalzenClub Schweiz, DWCS, Ernst Huwyler, sends details of some more of the many rollers which are to be found in his country. A Maffei & Jacob steam roller, No. 9374 of 1928, has been owned by the firm of Franz Vago at Müllheim Wigoltingen since 1933, in whose fleet it was numbered 38. When its working days were over, it was externally restored and plinthed outside the firm’s offices in the town. In 1981, as a result of a takeover, the firm’s name changed to Vago Müllheim-Wigoltingen, Zweigniederlassung KIBAG and later, on January 1st 2011, the name changed again to KIBAG Baulietung AG, Müllheim-Wigoltingen and the roller has subsequently been repainted in its blue livery and remains on display at the same location. Corgi The latest version of Corgi’s 1/43 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 van is a 1967 Devon Caravanette 1500 in pearl white and velvet green [8]. This new casting is a much more accurate representation of the split-screen VW Kombi than Corgi’s previous models. FoKAB’s famous bus running day is back on Sunday 12 September with a pop-up display of the King Alfred fleet the day before. Following a period of limited activity due to lockdown, the Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) confirms its plans for the weekend of 11-12 September 2021 as part of Winchester Heritage Open Days. Participation in Heritage Open Days has become an annual event for FoKAB and this year will be a two-day event. On Saturday there will be a display of rare local and historic buses and coaches. This will be at the Cattle Market car park in Worthy Lane, Winchester between 12:00 and 17:00 and will consist of up to 12 vehicles ranging from 1931 to 1970. The world’s oldest working excavator - a steam navvy built in 1909 - is celebrated in a new documentary. It spent 47 years under water in the Blue Lagoon at Arlesey before it was rescued by Bedford Sub Aqua club, among others, in 1977 following an 18-month campaign. The chequered history of the navvy is told by Ray Hooley, now 92, the engineering historian who organised the rescue. Latest news is that the navvy is back in working order thanks to the Vintage Excavator Trust of Threlkeld, Cumbria, and the Heritage Lottery Fund. So here I am self-isolating with plenty to eat, drink, read and chuck on the fire. In an effort to keep the brain box in trim, I’ve been thinking about the lorries I’ve owned. This took me back to the three that started me off, whose first three letters just happened to be ABC for Albion, Bean (also Beardmore and Bradford) and Caledon. The Albion was really the wrong vehicle to save in a Coventry scrapyard that was about to be cleared for housing. The proprietor lived in a derelict Tilling-Stevens bus with his “niece” and he did his best to steer me towards a couple of late 1920s six-ton Maudslays in Courtauld’s synthetic yarn livery.
