G’day to all you awesome attendees of Repco Beach Hop 22 — how bloody cool was that! We’re back for the 22nd Beach Hop and NZV8’s 22nd round-the-clock coverage of New Zealand’s most popular event. What a week, right? Take us back! This was my second time attending Beach Hop, the first having been in November when I was the photographer. My job then was to photograph all the features and events throughout the week. While it was a lot of work, and I collected thousands of photos, it was certainly a lot easier for me to organise my photographs in the proper order and send them in for someone else to put the whole magazine together. If you didn’t, you would have heard a lot of chatter about him or might even have seen him filming and photographing Beach Hop. Either way, his interesting story of how he came to attend the event is one that will warm your insides and show why Beach Hop is an event you cannot miss. You can’t have a Beach Hop without music. Although there was an array of musicians you could spend your time listening to, we managed to catch up with The Madeleines; a female vintage harmony trio specialising in jazz, swing, and glamour. The trio is made up of Shannon Evison, Hannah Kee, and Jess Rogers. They were not always a trio; they started off as soloists and performed in places such as London, Australia, and Hong Kong. Then, just as Beach Hop came to a halt due to the dreaded pandemic, the ladies’ careers overseas did the same. With that, they all decided to head home back to New Zealand. When Palmerston North local Jimmy Keeys decides he wants to attend a car show, there is a decent stable of cars to choose from. For Repco Beach Hop 22, it was his 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop coupe that got the call. This ’54 is no stranger to making the trip north. It received the Tairua Top Car award a number of years ago when the Coromandel leg of Beach Hop was held. The other options available in the substantial shed are an AC Cobra — not entirely ideal for indecisive November weather — a 1934 Ford five-window coupe, and a range of 1949 to 1951 Mercurys, to name a few. Amy and Mike got married just before Repco Beach Hop 22 and saw Beach Hop as a great place for a honeymoon and to show off Amy’s car. Amy Starry-Moon calls her style ‘pin-up/rockabilly’ — for those of you who remember the iconic movie Grease, ‘pin-up’ is good, pure ‘Pink Ladies’ Sandy, and ‘rockabilly’ is black-leather, wild Sandy. This is where LDYLO comes in. Amy had just sold her Chev C10 and was pretty sure she wanted an Impala, taking a road trip north to Kruzin Kustoms to see one that was for sale there. On arrival, Amy was instead shown a 1964 Buick Riviera that Kendal had purchased at the Pomona Swap Meet. When it was fired up and the note from the Bellflower exhaust echoed into the garage,…

If you have been around a few Beach Hops, you will undoubtedly know of Shona Sharp, although maybe not by her official name. But if I said the woman with the bright pink hair (which isn’t a wig!) with the little pink and white car, or just the words Peggy Sue, I guarantee you would know exactly to whom I was referring. This woman is one of the bright, cheerful, charismatic women of Beach Hop, also previously in the top five for Whanga Bar Hop Idol, known as Miss Candy Floss. Her fun attitude and smile draws people in and she’s always up for a chat about her little 1960 Ford Prefect 107E. Shona has attended every one of the 22 Beach Hop events and has no plans to stop…

Wayne’s classic 1963 Ford Fairlane compact is a car that he knew he wanted to own more than 50 years ago. This particular car was actually built in Whangamatā by a gentleman named Scott Morrison, who rebuilt it some 12 years ago. How it came to be in Wayne’s possession is undoubtedly a story of patience. Wayne has owned the car for 12 years, but it is not his first Fairlane; he first owned one more than 40 years ago — it was also a ’63. Back then, he stripped his Fairlane down with great plans to build it, but the sad call of a landlord wanting to sell the home meant Wayne had to sell the car along with other belongings to scrape together the deposit for a house.…

The Caravans and Classics Retro Caravan Show, now in its 12th year, is a steadily expanding aspect of Beach Hop. Last year 88 participants registered to bring their retro time-travelling machines; this year, there were even more. Campers set up on Thursday on Whangamata Area School’s campgrounds — a prime location with the Whangamata RSA nearby and Port Road, the main drag, just down the road — and performed their own Retro Caravan Light Show on Saturday night. The Retro Caravan Light Show was a great hit last year, so Beach Hop brought it back this year for the second time and, as expected, it was magic to see. The campers put on a spectacular display with their retro caravans, which were outfitted with matching decor from the 1950s to…

The JCD Customs & Marine Classic Pickup Show has gained in popularity since it made its debut at the Repco Beach Hop 21. This is an event you wouldn’t want to miss if you enjoy classic pickup trucks from the early 1940s to late-model bagged trucks from the 1990s. The show drew a steady flow of spectators through the gate, with rock and rollers pounding out tunes for the better part of the morning. Its location in the parking lots next to the Whangamata RSA quickly filled up, with our rough estimate putting the number of attendees at 50 or more. Nyla Gray was born and bred in Hawera and recently moved to live in New Plymouth. She decided to attend Repco Beach Hop 22 to help out a friend with a stall that sells consoles. Nyla filled in one of the entry forms from the programme but she failed to answer the compulsory question: Who is the major sponsor of Repco Beach Hop 2022? After the submission of the first form, she said she “had a message from a spirit friend to do another”. If someone described a three-axle tipper truck with twin chrome stacks, you’d think they were describing an agricultural Fieldays entrant. However, Kevin Jellyman’s 1931 Ford AA truck is unquestionably in the right place cruising the streets of Repco Beach Hop 2022. A regular attendee at the Hop, Kevin has brought several cars up from his home city of Christchurch — a feat by itself, with the round trip consisting of just over 2000kms. The most notable, his 1953 Ford F100, finished in the top 5 at Repco Beach Hop 2017. You’d think it would be hard to replace the F100 with something more unusual. Men and women in the 30 to 40 years age group are a generation whose interest in cars was heavily influenced by performance cars, Aussie Fords, and Holdens. Most built Japanese rockets or tough Aussie street machines; few ventured down the American classic road. Andrew Beatson may have simply been one of those one-of-a-kind, old souls who saw the class and beauty in American cars from a young age. Anything with the word ‘classic’ in it usually has a price tag that reflects its value, which is why the younger generation is unlikely to be seen driving cars from that era. Trev’s 1951 Studebaker looked amazing in the sun, parked in the circle of top picks. We caught up with Trev while he was passionately giving the car a wipe-down. He said being picked was cool and it was his fourth time in the Top 10. He was also feeling a bit nervous. Trev’s Studebaker definitely received a load of attention, with many questions asked about the build. Trev says he is “running out of years” to do more cars, but we assured him he is not. Repco Beach Hop’s energy pulses from sparrow fart until late at night. On Thursday, there is a big drive to Thames for the Power Cruise, with most people returning to Whangamatā around 3pm. This little beauty began its voyage to Repco Beach Hop 2022 in Reading, south of London, back in 1989, when hot rodder Jimmy Keeys bought it with all the good intentions in the world of fixing it up and getting it running. The Ford Popular was shipped to New Zealand in a 20-foot container — right next to an AC Cobra kit. Dan Thompson’s 1951 Allard P1 roadster has a bit of racing heritage. It was seen zooming around racetracks throughout New Zealand in the late ’60s. That was almost 50 years ago, and that was when it was last seen — until Dan found it hibernating in a barn in Thames 15 years ago; a real barn find — complete with chickens living in it. Not only did the Allard P1 have its fair share of battle scars from its racing heyday, but it wasn’t in good condition and required a complex restoration. Being an automotive machinist by trade, Dan had just the right skill set to complete the job. It also happened to be quiet at work, so there was ample time to carry out the restoration. Dylan Smith wasn’t originally looking for a wagon but the wagon came looking for him. Approximately two years ago, having just sold another vehicle, the Kruzin Kustoms co-owner was on the hunt for something special, and the colour scheme of this 1959 Ford Country Sedan caught his attention immediately. The wagon — hailing from Santa Ana, California — had had only two owners and, when Dylan purchased it, it had been with the second owner for 36 years. “I received this folder with receipts of when the dude did the original restoration on it — so it’s got a documented history, which is pretty neat!” he says. Whangamatā’s shopkeepers, cafes, bakeries, and dairy workers all started their day early in anticipation of one of the busiest days of the year. Though some came to Port Road early for breakfast and coffee, others arrived in time to find parking before the big parade. Officials in fluorescent vests began pouring out of vehicles and setting up roadblocks with traffic cones. The grand parade was just around the corner. A low rumble reverberated throughout the town as cars begin to arrive at the rugby grounds in an orderly procession, with Ultimate Pass entrants checking in at the Esplanade from 8am onwards. Every year, Beach Hop offers the opportunity the phone for Beach Hop goers to have a chance at choosing between some amazing prizes. This year was no different — apart from the restrictions of Covid, which meant that Noddy and his amazing partner, who generally go to America for their Kiwis on Route Tours and choose the prize vehicle while over there, were unable to do so. So, this year, they had to up their technology game and have many Zoom video calls to inspect the trucks — yes, plural. They decided to have not one truck but two sourced from America: 1968 F100s; a short base for the programme entry form prize, and a long base for the Beach Hop Truck. There is a maximum of 1200 spots available for cars to compete in Repco Beach Hop. However, only 10 vehicles make it into the show ring on Sunday. Voting for the Top 10 — five cars, three motorcycles, and two caravans — is open to anyone who attends the show. People do so by nominating their individual favourites on the voting forms that are included in their programmes. The winners are announced at the prize-giving on Saturday, and those who make the cut are asked to appear in the show ring at the Ford Reserve on Sunday. This step is to allow attendees at the show to make the ultimate decision regarding the best car, best bike, and best caravan by placing gold coins in the appropriate buckets located within…

We knew Nikolas Delegat’s ’56 Ford F100 had to make the Top 5, so it was no surprise when he picked up the award at the JCD Customs & Marine Classic Pickup Show on Saturday. Unfortunately for us, we didn’t see the truck until later in the week, or we would have brought you a full feature — but don’t worry; we plan to do so in a later issue of NZV8. The bright orange and white 2017 Caravan Lightweight Tracker named Priscila was “Mum’s baby”, Zoé says. Zoé, the daughter of the late Jane Spence, attended Repco Beach Hop 22 with her dad and brother, Ben and Sid. Jane was the mastermind behind this glorious caravan facelift, turning it from a dilapidated and infested shell to what you saw at Beach Hop with the help of Mike Wells, who himself wasn’t sure about the colour scheme. Zoé says her mother insisted on the orange as it was her favourite colour. Sadly, Jane Spence passed away two weeks before Repco Beach Hop 22 and the family thought twice about coming, but they decided they would bring the caravan in her honour. “Have you seen the FJ?” or “You’ve got to check out the FJ” must have been among the most common statements heard over the first few days of Repco Beach Hop 22. Those comments were with good reason. While most people know what an FJ Holden looks like, this is certainly not it. The brainchild of Robert McVicker, a Kiwi who has called Aussie home for many years, the car was a knockout from the time it touched down on Kiwi soil. Being well aware of the spectacle that Repco Beach Hop has become, Robert knew the best place to debut the three-and-a-half-year build was at Repco Beach Hop 22. Repco, as we’re sure you are aware by now, has the naming rights to Beach Hop, and the team can’t think of a better place to celebrate the company’s 100th birthday than with the fans and cruisers at their favourite event: Repco Beach Hop. Repco started off in the first three to four years of Beach Hop as a minor sponsor, but for the past 12 years it has been a major sponsor for this amazing event. Another major sponsor for the past 15 years has been Ford New Zealand. The displays at Ford Reserve were well worth taking a look at; you got to see the first batch of Ford’s electric vehicle, the Mustang Mach-E, as well as other current models. Ford came up with the Elite 20 event for the November Repco Beach Hop 20 and decided to do it again this year. To be selected, the vehicle had to be a Ford, of course, with a Ford engine. Ford selected five vehicles at the OceanaGold Waihi and Go Waihi Warm Up Party, followed by another five at the Repco Power Cruise in Thames, then selected the final 10 at the Castrol Edge Thunder Cruise at Onemana. Wet Wet Wet might be a fine name for a Scottish soft rock band but, as a weather forecast for the first day of Repco Beach Hop 2022, it is not so good. For once the weather guys actually got it right and wet was exactly what we got, with a side serving of gale-force winds just to set the scene. The Beach Hop programme is jam-packed with events on Friday and Saturday night, but the biggest drawcards are the unscripted events that take place on the main street. Cruising the main street after dark was exactly that — pure homegrown entertainment, or “Laps” as many called it. For those who enjoyed a bit of comfort with their pleasure, they parked up early, popped the trunk and pulled out their folding chairs — some looking so comfortable it’s like they’ve found their perfect spot after all the years of attending the Beach Hop. The second day of Repco Beach Hop saw grey skies and rain first thing in the morning, but the sound of motors revving across Whangamatā, mixed with the smell of the seaside, indicated that everything was all go for the day. As we arrived at the early check-in of 8am, the Repco Beach Hop crew were seen in rain jackets, holding umbrellas and already guiding the cars in one by one to form the well-known lines of vehicles you see on the Ford Reserve every year, readying for departure on the Repco Thames Power Cruise, which would kick off at 10am. Geoff has spent the past 27 years as owner of a golf-course construction company. However, the choice of driver for this Arrowtown local is not a golf club but his beautiful 1956 Chevrolet 3100 truck. This was the second time the 3100 had attended Beach Hop, the first trip being in 2014. Why this truck, you might wonder. Geoff has owned plenty of vehicles over the years — Chevs, Fords, Holdens, hot rods, and even a BSA motorcycle — but admits he loves Chev trucks. “I’ve owned four Silverados over the years; still have [this] one,” he says. In October 2009, Paul Myers and his partner Claire found themselves looking for a new car to have in the shed. The pair had narrowed it down to two: this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro or a VK Holden Commodore. To say Claire was unimpressed with the VK is something of an understatement. To her “it was just a Commodore” and that immediately removed it from the list, so the Camaro it was. The Aucklanders spied the listing on Trade Me. There is a reason Beach Hop is so successful, and it all starts with the people — not just the volunteers who sacrifice so much to run the event every year. The people of Whangamatā are so giving with their time and so welcoming, it is probably one of the friendliest places in the country, which is why so many visitors keep coming back. Sure, the surf beach, wonderful estuaries, car scene, and rock and roll play a part, but if the town as a whole didn’t welcome you the event would never have lasted. Leaving the bonnet of his ’70 GTX up almost everywhere he went at Repco Beach Hop 22 saw Dean Bevan’s car get plenty of attention. While the B-body shape is always popular, and the factory lime green colour grabs attention, the big talking point was what’s under the hood. When Dean first got the car on the road after four long years of rust repairs, the 440ci big block was running a carburetted naturally aspirated set-up. That evolved into a FiTech EFI system, and not too long afterwards a TorqStorm supercharger was added. The Repco sponsored Pre 49 Show held at the Whangamata Club went off this year — it seems this aspect of Repco Beach Hop just keeps on growing. The sheer numbers of the overall event have resulted in one of the most diverse mixes of all genres at Repco Beach Hop and the Pre 49 Show was no exception. To think about this a little more broadly outside the event, the pre 49 hot rod movement in New Zealand has been tarred as a cliquey and somewhat elite group. But at Repco Beach Hop, the coming together of the whole automotive scene in New Zealand has dropped that cliquey barrier and the Pre 49 guys enjoy being part of the mix of this fantastic week at Whangamata. Ice creams, road signs, laughter, pinstripe painting, and pin-ups are just some of the things you would hear and see if you popped down to the NZ Petrolhead Vintage Market, which was held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. With 60-plus vintage, retro, and hot rod themed stalls to gaze over, there was a multitude of options, no matter your taste or style. Get a makeover! Sport a custom art tattoo! Feast your eyes on the antiques/mantiques! And if you were feeling brave enough, you could dance to the rock ‘n’ roll tunes being played — the crowd would surely cheer you on. What is a Beach Hop without seeing the glitz and glamour of ladies who go to great lengths with hair, wardrobe choice, and makeup, taking on the many looks of Pin-up and Rockabilly? Simply, it’s not. Seeing the continuous array of outfits gives you the feeling you have indeed stepped back into an era of style and poise. Mix those ladies with the New World Wearable Arts & Junkyard Fashion show and you can see Beach Hop is not only about cars! With the sun beaming on Saturday it made the stage conditions perfect for the special panel of guest judges ready to go as they got to see many twirls and even roller skating on stage. Owen and Dianne Barlow have attended all but two Beach Hops, and have always brought along their 1939 Chev Master. After looking around, they came across the vehicle and took possession of it in late 2002. It had originally been hot rodded by Grant Harrison from Gisborne. First on the agenda was to give it power steering. Six years of driving went by, and Owen and Diane decided it was time for the big task of rebuilding it. Bob Summerell, from Summerell Panel and Paint Morrinsville, totally worked his magic on the 39 guards, also completely stripping and soda blasting the Barlows’ pride and joy. This 1971 Chev pickup was built by Kruzin Kustoms in Palmerston North for its customers, Todd and Tash Collins. It is the second car owned by the couple to be picked for the Top 10 Shootout. The team at Kruzin Kustoms was feeling “pretty awesome” and “pretty proud of it” and said it was good to “get recognition for everybody’s hard work”. Celebratory drinks were in order when the pickup was named on the Saturday — and we heard the well-designed chiller in the back of the C10 was refilled a couple of times. Winning the Top Caravan award were Howard and Kim Fox from Auckland, with their yellow and white pineapple-themed 1965 Zephyr caravan, originally built in Dunedin. Having brought their beauty to Repco Beach Hop four times before, and not won anything, they said it was exciting and cool to have won. The caravan’s original colour was mustard but Kim didn’t want to keep that colour and decided on yellow. She did a lot of the interior upholstery and curtains, and Howard did many of the structural repairs to “keep it alive” — a need made apparent one year when a back window fell out as they were leaving Beach Hop. Howard remembers caravanning with his parents, and that memory helped with the decision to buy a caravan and make memories for…

Five years ago, John was looking for a new project to build because, after selling his 1968 Mustang, he missed having a toy in the garage. When a clean ’63 C10 clear over patina truck came up for sale, it was an easy yes, because he wanted something different and he didn’t want to spend too much time maintaining it. Having previously owned a number of show-standard cars, the idea of having a patina truck appealed; it meant that polishing and washing were not required as frequently. Andrew had great intentions of using it daily, with a spot of drag racing in between.
