It’s not a name you’ll read too frequently on these pages, but Swedish supercar builder Koenigsegg has been developing technology that could revolutionize the internal-combustion engine. It’s been nicknamed the ‘camless’ engine, because it does away with a conventional camshaft with electronically actuated pneumatic valves. Since each valve could be controlled individually, this allows for near-infinite variability in valve timing, lift, and duration, as well as easy cylinder deactivation for economy. All of this is said to be good for improvements in both power and economy by up to 30 per cent, coupled with a reduction in emissions. Andy Duffin’s 20B-powered FD RX-7 underwent a huge transformation heading into its 2015 assault on the World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC), one that was primarily focused on how the air passes over, under, and through the RX-7 body shell. As a result, the car’s profile changed from sleek and factory to very aggressive, with large front and rear apertures, and all with the aim of increasing downforce and minimizing drag. While some might assume the team just bolted on a bunch of off-the-shelf parts and hoped that they’d do the trick, the reality is that the process was a design-and-build affair, based around a very involved computer analysis known as ‘CFD’ — computational fluid dynamics. Leon Scott has contested Superlap here in New Zealand since its infancy, so there’s no denying that he has got a few laps under his belt, and it shows. His Mitsubishi Evo has been under development since those early days, and it’s gone through many iterations. Leon has the Evo humming along nicely in its current guise, with enough power when required, but, more importantly, it’s reliable. OPIE’S STARLET GAINS TRACTION Back in Issue No. 222, we took a close look at Richard Opie’s long-term Toyota KP Starlet project. As Richard is a contributor of ours, we’ve been keeping an eye on its progress, and the updates that have been going on are well worth a mention.
