Aucklander Reg Cook has spent the majority of his adult life in pursuit of speed — on the race circuit; on gravel; and, more recently, on the salt, adding land-speed records to his résumé. But it’s perhaps his latest project, a landspeed streamliner, that is his most ambitious to date. The search for more power means you’ll always aim for the densest possible air mass inside your combustion chamber. Put simply, the more air you have present in the chamber, the more fuel you can add and the more power you will make. But a few factors will always stand in the way of adding more oxygen. Short of increasing an engine’s actual capacity, you can compress the oxygen to fit more of it into the combustion chamber, via a higher compression ratio; a boost-adder, like a turbo; or both. This is where problems arise, as thermodynamics come into play. The more you compress that air, the more heat is generated, which can lead to pre-ignition of your combustion mix and then detonation, which can kill your engine really fast.…

With the year’s season done and dusted, the JapRace Drift South crew decided to chuck on an event focused on good vibes, friendly faces, and as much drifting squeezed into a day as humanly possible — and, thus, the Battle Royale event, held at Christchurch’s Mike Pero Motorsport Park on June 5, was born. The day had a three-part format starting with the Battle Royale, which ditched the traditional qualifying session in favour of a threebattle system to optimize drivers’ on-track time and ensure that each had at least three cracks at it. From the judges’ scores, a top eight was established to run the standard elimination-tree format.
