There is a perception that cinema’s audience numbers are dwindling as people turn to the internet for their movie fix however, the numbers disagree. According to Nielsen, the numbers remain stable, possibly even showing signs of growth.
In 2011, 2,012,000 New Zealanders said they had visited the cinema in the last six months and in 2013 that number was 2,157,000. Last year 2,203,000 said they had visited the cinema in the last six months. However, in that time it’s important to consider the impact of population growth.
While audience numbers haven’t seen a substantial change, Colenso BBDO copywriter Simon Vicars says the ubiquity of channels at the audience’s disposal may be taking some of the advertising content away from the cinema, resulting in fewer brands opting to use cinema.
