The next coin in the American Innovation Dollar series will be honoring Michigan and the creation of the auto assembly line. Henry Ford was the first to use the assembly line to build cars. With the use of conveyor belts, the parts were moved toward the workers instead of the workers moving around the vehicle. Despite the marvel of this new manufacturing method, workers found their jobs had become boring, as they were only doing one or two tasks. The newfound strict timing that went along with a moving assembly also made it hard for the workers to ensure their tasks were done. My annual numismatic travels typically kick off with flights south to attend the FUN convention in Orlando or east to New York City to take in the New York International Convention. This year was different. Not heading out first until the last weekend of January, I climbed behind the wheel of the Audi and headed to Fargo to take in the 65th annual show of the Red River Valley Coin Club, another event I’ve been attending with fair regularity over the past two or three decades. We are still running full steam ahead in NumisMaster, carrying the momentum from last month. The first part of the Coin of The Year (COTY) process has been completed. Mints from across the world submitted their best 2024 coins for nomination and narrowing them down will be difficult! Many of us spend our collecting energies entirely on modern or classic United States coin series, which undoubtedly can be a lot of fun. There is history, artistry, and some neat economics all included in the field. But in the big, wide world of numismatics, there are other series that might attract our attention as well. ■ Are there any dates for Prooflike Uncirculated Kennedy half dollars that are more common or particularly rare? Prooflike 1965 to 1967 half dollars with mirrored fields and sandblasted devices are available in Special Mint Sets from those dates. It appears some 1970 examples may have been struck on Proof planchets using dies meant for Uncirculated strikes. The 1972-D date is considered a little more available. The PL half dollars of 1984-D appear to have originated from a heavily polished die at the Mint. I wasn’t familiar with the term “jitney” as slang for a five-cent piece. Its origin is apparently still in dispute. One reference tied it to a deviation from a Russian coinage term, and another linked it to the French term jeton. Certainly, in the boxing world, it was in use by 1905. If there is anything scarcer than platinum-composition U.S. coins, it’s the people who collect them. Yes, there are collectors out there, but just as with the First Spouse gold coins, there are so few collectors that many dealers buy and sell the coins at the same price regardless of the individual mintages. Platinum is “the other white metal.” It has industrial uses. It is used in jewelry. It is used on occasion in coins. The mintages of some Platinum American Eagle coins are ridiculously low, but that hasn’t resulted in demand or prices as might be expected. This month, we’re starting to see more 2025 coins and sets added in, replacing some of the 2022 and 2023 slots. The first 2025 American Women’s Quarter was released, honoring Ida B. Wells. The numbers for the 100-coin bag, two-roll set, and the P, D, S rolls set were added to the bottom of the right column on the second page, shifting everything up and removing one of the 2023 quarters from the list. The addition of the 2025 Native American dollar has been added to the top of the left column on the right page as well.
