Uprooted trees lie on a western North Carolina home on September 29 after Hurricane Helene swept through the southeastern United States. The Category 4 storm, which made landfall in Florida on September 26, killed at least 227 people, making it the deadliest hurricane to hit the mainland U.S. since Katrina.
