Robbie Coltrane was larger than life – his talent, brain, humour, heart, melancholy, rumbling laugh and sheer physical bulk.
On October 14, the actor died in his native Scotland after a long illness. He was 72.
Playing Hogwarts’ half-giant gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter franchise secured Robbie millions of adoring fans worldwide, including his young co-stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton, who all remembered his kindness to them on set.
Becoming a childhood hero was an unlikely turn of events for hard-drinking, tough-talking Robbie, who first shot to fame in cutting-edge British television comedy with Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Laurie.
Nevertheless, he embraced his Harry Potter celebrity with gracious good humour.
