Beloved children’s film Matilda celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, and its little leading lady, Mara Wilson, is all grown up! On the eve of the momentous milestone, Mara, now 34, has reflected on how close she became to her co-star and director, Danny DeVito.
While he might have played her distant father on-screen, Mara says that behind the scenes, Danny was anything but. In fact, she says she “immediately felt a connection with him”.
During fi lming, Mara’s mother, Susie, battled breast cancer and sadly died shortly before the film premiered in 1996. Mara says Danny and his wife, Rhea Perlman, who played Matilda’s mum, were always there for her.
