In some way, shape, or form, my life has always involved athletics. I grew up golfing and played at the collegiate level. No puffery here; I was a below-average college golfer who was blessed with a wonderful, big-hearted coach, Diane Daugherty. She graciously let me stick around until I earned my degree. That was important to her. Besides great golf mechanics, I learned from her the value of being kind, the importance of accountability, and the impact of giving back to one’s community. Her influence on me, especially in my quirky college years, was immense. Positivity isn’t always beneficial. In fact, sometimes it’s toxic. While research suggests optimism may lower the risk of developing cardiovascular conditions and even help one live longer, it becomes toxic “when in an interpersonal way, you are saying things to shut down someone else’s experience of their emotions,” says Caryl Rosen, PhD, a clinical psychologist and founding member of Mosaic Therapy in Naples. Instead of the recipient feeling better, they often feel “misunderstood, shut down, and distanced,” she explains. Rosen says she often notices toxic positivity directed at people who experience a breakup or a significant loss. More than 21 years ago, Raymond Floyd, golf champion and course architect, designed the Raptor Bay Golf Club course in Bonita Springs. At the time, he revolutionized golf course design by creating a course with no rough and no formal bunkers. Floyd completely retired in 2013—even though his design team continued to tempt him with design projects. At first glance, two juvenile burrowing owls appear to embrace in this poignant photograph by Cindy Barbanera-Wedel of Sarasota. However, as she explains, the owls actually are preparing “for adulthood by practicing stalking and pouncing on one another.” Entitled Owlet Antics, the dynamic shot was photographed in May 2020 in Cape Coral, where burrowing owls are local avifauna and the city’s official bird. As their name indicates, these petite owls live belowground, occupying either holes they dig themselves or those vacated by small animals like squirrels.
