In March 2012, he opened EJ’s Bayfront Café and never looked back. “I’ve worked in country clubs and fine dining restaurants, and I know it’s hard to meet customer expectations in those situations,” says Becker. “Breakfast and lunch have a better profit margin, and it gives me the flexibility to have a family and a life.” Don’t think Becker is taking it easy, however. Every day, Jake Jones scours the internet for used surfboards. But he’s not heading to the beach—he’s heading to his driveway. That’s where the graphic designer transforms beat-up boards into bold works of art. “The most challenging part is removing the fiberglass,” he says. “There’s a lot of dust and noise. But once I get my palette ready to go, I’m excited to start carving.
