A big high five to reader Martha Jette, of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, who urged us to take a close look at this photo snapped at a block party celebrating the centennial of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska, in 2001. The whole community came together for a barbecue, games and music. To top off the evening, one of the organizers, Brett Simenson, arranged a fireworks show, the perfect opportunity to get a stunning photograph of the church illuminated by the brilliant explosions above. He asked his neighbor to capture the event with his camera.
