A LOT is often said about how women should behave, what they should wear and how they should speak. A woman is often raised to be a wife, mother and daughter-in law who also just happens to have a job.
The boy, however, is just expected to become a man – on his own. There isn’t as much focus on making him a potential husband, father and son-in-law, etc. All he had to do was grow up, get a job and start his own family. And if he happened to get overwhelmed, tough luck. He’d be told to “man up” and deal with it. “Indoda ayikhali,” you’d often hear older men telling younger ones.
