When I started mountain biking, racing was the dominant part of the culture. The AMBA series was a pretty big deal, and racers would contest cross-country, downhill, trials and uphill events on the same weekend, often on the same bike. There were series sponsors and even full-season number plates, and the circus would visit almost every state in Australia.
