The godmother of upcycling, Annie Sloan was into painting reclaimed goodies long before it became fashionable. Her brilliant idea, 25 years ago, was to create an easy-peasy furniture paint that takes away the need for sanding and priming, and works as well on leather armchairs and curtains as it does on wood, metal and plastic. Having built her cult chalk paint range and published many books on decorating, Annie is today recognised as one of Britain’s most influential designers, and has launched ranges of wall paints and fabrics, as well as stencils and brushes. MATERIALS Coloured polymer clay Translucent polymer clay Clay roller Greaseproof paper Foam brush High gloss varnish Craft knife Gold leaf 01 Mix together the translucent clay with your chosen colour. Make five small balls of clay – one of pure translucent, one pure colour, and then three variations of both types of clay mixed together. 02 Begin by placing the pure translucent ball in the middle, and wrap the pieces of mixed clay around it. 03 Finish by wrapping the whole piece with the layer of pure colour to create a solid ring. 04 Roll out flat in between sheets of greaseproof baking paper until all of the layers have blended together. 05 Cut the sides to create a flat edge, then bake according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 06 Once…

We’ve long been fans of hello DODO’s vibrant screen prints and products ranging from T-shirts to pin badges, as well as designosaurYEAH’s playful statement laser cut jewellery. Both brands are packed with energy and personality. Ali and Jam met at Plymouth University, where Ali was studying design and photography, and Jam was doing graphic design. They became close friends then fell in love, and in 2011 launched hello DODO together. Karli and Jacques likewise became a couple while studying Product Design at Sussex University and launched designosaurYEAH in 2012. The two duos met at the various maker and craft fairs they’ve exhibited at across the UK, and soon realised they had a similar design outlook, as well as getting on brilliantly as mates. Artist and maker Rachel Oome shares her home with husband Jeroen, six-year-old Moos, one dog, two cats, three sheep and various chickens and birds. They live in the Dutch village of Raamsdonksveer, which they were drawn to because of the old buildings and the diversity of residents and amenities. Shops, cafés plus the local baker and carpenter are on their doorstep. They live in an old mansion, built in 1910 and now split into two homes. There’s ample space for their family, with a large living and dining area, kitchen, two large bedrooms – and, of course, a sizeable garden to accommodate their collection of animals. Christmas prep starts super early at Rose Hill Designs, in November or December... which sounds like everyone else, but actually I’m designing for 2016! It all has to be ready for trade shows in January. I like to work on Christmas designs during the cold wintery days, keeping the likes of Percy Pug and his friends warm in their festive jumpers.
