Architect Philippe Harden deliberately went looking for the most dilapidated apartment he could find in central Paris when he went hunting for a new home. As an architect, he was seeking an adventure – an opportunity to do something new and different. “I was looking for an apartment that had the most potential possible for renovation,” he says. As a sculptor and an interior curator, it was inevitable that Rodan Kane Hart and Maybe Corpaci would treat their home as something of an experimental space. It is a constantly evolving creative outlet for their ideas and collections of art and design as much as a home, studio and refuge. It’s on the sixth floor – the very top – of a 1930s building in Cape Town’s CBD, originally built for a shipping company. When designer Anke Stegmann and her civil engineer husband Johnny Cullum first bought this piece of open land on the slopes of Table Mountain 30 years ago, they were taken by its location in a narrow glen. “It’s very rock ‘n’ roll,” says the owner of this Cape Dutch colonial mansion in Cape Town.
