FLYING SCOTSMAN Continued from p.345 M.E. 4711, 24 February 2023 Rod and slidebar oiling pots I have revisited the coupling/ connecting rod oiling pots these are the same design but the material has been changed from steel to brass. I had tried to find bronze 3⁄16 inch hex which would be as the prototype but after a few weeks searching in vain I have settled for brass. By the way, today Flying Scotsman has the BR steel button type pots although I have spotted the odd hex steel pot thrown in. Yes, I could machine some round bronze bar to hex but life is short enough. I can always revisit these again once the model is finished. A special event took place at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex in July last year, to mark and celebrate 150 years of these incredible little locomotives. Designed by William Stroudley, CME of the London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR), fifty of the Terrier class were built between 1872 and 1880. Stroudley designed many locomotives during his time with the Railway but the Terriers will forever remain his most successful. Established in 1960, the Bluebell Railway's lines had originally been part of the LB&SCR - home territory to the Terriers - before becoming the well-known, much loved preserved railway that it is today and one of the earliest 'preserved' lines in this country and, indeed, the world. Morning all. Quite a cold spell is making itself a nuisance at the moment, but it is February, so it won't be long before the warmer rain arrives… Stuart Merton, entering the metric debate on here, says car wheels and tyres are measured in Imperial and metric styles, i.e. diameter in inches and width in mm. He thinks British Leyland made some Metros with 'metric' wheels but the supply of tyres dried up. Wikipedia says they were designed to take run-flat tyres. Continued from p.333 M.E. 4711,24 February 2023 This instalment is mainly about the wheels and axles with the photographs which you didn't see last time. Beginning with photo 92, this is a picture which I particularly like, and it is B1 No. 61314 which shows the wheels off nicely and as you will see it is one with a flush sided tender and quite pronounced rivets around the periphery of the smoke box. It has a Stones generator on the right front of the side platform, so it has electric lighting. The rivets around the rear of the smokebox are not as pronounced as some of the other B1 s. Continued from p.313 M.E. 4711,24 February 2023 The Historic Vehicles Trust In addition, being the owners of Jurassic, the Historic Vehicles Trust has several other items of considerable interest on site (tables 2 and 3). Its second locomotive, a 1947 vintage straight framed 20 HP 'Simplex' diesel, was No. 8 in the stock list. Originally built for work in relation to coastal defences, this locomotive, maker's number 9264, was sold to Mablethorpe Brick and Tile Works and re-sold in 1970 to Skegness Brick and Tile Company where it worked until 1976. Finally re-surfacing at a farm sale, it was acquired for the Trust in 1994. Shortly afterwards, restoration of this locomotive was commenced by Trust chairman, Richard Shepherd,…

I asked around to see if anyone had an old Camping 'Gaz' stove unit that could be adapted, as a while ago I had obtained a batch of the small gas canisters that are compatible with these units, so this was the ideal piece of equipment to use. I have tended to stick to unlined black for my previous locomotives and could have persevered with the First World War austerity livery, 'Great War Grey', which had been the designer's intention. I decided that this finish would not do justice to such an elegant model, however authentic it might have been. The correct cast brass SECR cabside plates for this period were supplied with the locomotive but not used (photo 86). Having decided to use the prewar livery, as applied when the locomotives were brand new, I needed to acquire the correct paint, transfers (decals) and cabside numbers. The research file that…
