Although masses of fun, Minis were never known for a comfortable ride, largely down to the short wheelbase and limited suspension travel, but there was another factor which did nothing to improve overall comfort and this was the design of the seats. Most early Minis were made with fixedback seats, which was normal at the time. They only had very limited fore and aftadjustment. The range of adjustment could be significantly extended by the fitting of aftermarket seat adjuster brackets which allowed height adjustment to the front of the seat as well as much more afttravel. MiniWorld staff and writers reporting on their month in, under and around Minis… It took a good few months to run in Sheldon’s 1293cc Rob Walker engine. I have to say that running the engine in was actually quite painless as I combined it with fun trips out to the coast and the countryside on A-roads, rather than motorways which is a no-no with the running-in process. The 500-mile mark was a good point to get the engine tuned on a rolling road and it’s a critical part of engine set-up. In 2014 I bought a bare 1980s shell, in order to re-shell a Mini that was beyond saving. Having collected Minis for so long I had all the parts to build one from scratch. When it came to the look of this Mini, I was inspired by examples I saw in MiniWorld and on Facebook and Instagram and decided to build something to my own taste. I really wanted a period Mk1 racer look and particularly liked the styling of Swiftune’s Mini racer, Willow 2. I did the welding in my own garage, at home, starting with welding in Mk1 rear light infill panels and I made the mods to fit a Mk1 grille. Former Special Tuning Manager, Basil Wales, passed away on 12 January 2022. He was incredibly enthusiastic about the Mini and MGs in general and wrote a monthly column in MiniWorld during 2012. He told us about the start of his career at BMC: “In 1959, a. er two years of National Service, a challenging start to my career was being o. ered a brand new unidentified job with the newly-formed BMC Service Division. One of the most important jobs when restoring a Mini, or when carrying out any body repairs, is to ensure that the panels are as ‘straight’ as absolutely possible. No matter how good the paint is, if the panel or panels have high or low spots, or are rippled in any way, the resulting overall finish will be ruined. Mini bodywork is rarely perfect as there are slight curves and variations, particularly at the panel edges. If they are supposed to be there, i.e. if your Mini, and the majority of other Minis, were made this way, then it is best to leave them as rectification may involve ridiculous amounts of work and the result may be that the Mini does not look quite right. In December 2020 Freddie St George and his mother Giulia were both awarded MBEs by HRH Princess Royal. Together they have helped to raise almost £3 million for children's charities via their Italian Job charity driving tour which takes participants, mainly in Minis, on epic adventures in Italy. Giulia told MiniWorld: "I accept the award on behalf of all Jobbers from 1990 to the present day and I gladly share it with them."
