Having been friends with Sandra and Colin Wright and their Mini-mad family for many years it's lovely to see them fulfil their dream of owning a Cooper S. Well, sort of… They have built their Mk1 850, Gloria, into a stunning car that embodies the spirit of a Cooper S. It's a truly fantastic achievement that is sure to give them and their family years of pleasure. As we head into autumn I am very grateful that we were able to enjoy a season of Mini shows here in the UK (you can see our event photos on pages 80-87) but I am conscious that this has not been the case in other countries. James Russell's Mini adventure started whilst having a few bevvies at Neal Goldspring's house. Neal is James' girlfriend Charlotte's dad. He is no stranger to the Mini scene and has recently started up a Mini restoration business called NG Mini Repairs and Restoration using his knowledge and passion for the Mini. "This was three or four year ago,” explains James. "I said I was going to buy a Mini. Charlotte always wanted one. Neal said that, as there are so many Minis out there that are bodged up, the best thing to do is build one from scratch so we did. In everyday cars nowadays we just take electric screen washers for granted. Minis were fitted with electric washers only from 1976 onwards, when the rest of the wiring and switches were upgraded and the wash and wipe facilities moved to the new, additional steering column stalk. All previous Minis had a manually-operated screenwash pump located either close to the steering column or in the centre of the switch panel; this happened a short while after the ignition switch was incorporated into the steering lock. What began as a handful of Minis led by Terry Baker to the nearby children's hospice in 1995 has become the biggest and best event in the Mini calendar in the West of England, drawing in supporters from around the country for this one-of-a-kind tour. Like most other Mini events last year, the LGT was put on hold so they couldn't mark its special birthday. This only served to make Terry and the team all the more determined to make this year's event one to be remembered. They also had to find a suitable new campsite at the last minute for more than 200 Minis. The LGT begins on the Saturday with the Onesie Run, from Northam Burrows, through Westward Ho! and Appledore. This is the latest in a recent crop of very high-specification, high-price, coachbuilt ‘restomod' Mini tributes. The unique machine comes from Spectre Vehicle Design of Vancouver, Canada. We have just managed to get these launch photos so that fans of ultimate Mini transformations can feast their eyes but, as yet, we have no final technical specification. Which VTEC K20 engine is procured or prepared is not mentioned, although we have been in contact with Spectre. If they use one of the 272bhp (at the crank) versions, with the promised 807.4kg kerb weight, this hints at a mind-altering power to weight ratio of around 337bhp/tonne. In the not-so-distant past, Minis were everyday cars and it would have been extremely unlikely that it would cross any Mini owner's mind to lay their car up for winter. After all, Minis are one of the best cars to drive in snow. Today, though, with all original Minis now being classics and their values increasing accordingly, it makes a lot of sense to lay up, or partly lay up, your Mini for the winter months. Doing so will avoid any driving in bad weather and will prevent contact with road salt; basically rock salt, which is extremely corrosive to mild steel without special inhibitors which are not added by the authorities in the UK. One of the bigger dilemmas, if you own an older Mini with front drums, is whether you should upgrade the brakes to make it safer to drive. If the Mini is pre-mid-1964 and still has the original single-leading-shoe drum brakes at each corner, the answer is definitely yes if you drive it to any extent on the road. If the engine is standard, or only mildly tuned, the best way to upgrade from single-leading-shoe fronts is to fit twin-leading-shoe front backplate assemblies and new front drums. This mod is undetectable unless examined from underneath and is a mod that, in my opinion, is as acceptable as fitting seat belts to a Mini that does not legally require them. This event, celebrating classic motorsport and aviation, took place 17-19 September at Goodwood Motor Circuit, near Chichester. The Mini Cooper was launched in 1961 so this year the Revival saw a number of celebrations for its 60th anniversary. Friday saw the practice run for the inaugural John Whitmore Trophy race on Saturday morning. It was a weekend highlight for Mini fans and others. Named after the winner of the 1961 British Saloon Car Championship, who piloted a Morris Mini-Minor, the 45-minute race featured 30 Mini Cooper Ss, each driven by two well-known drivers, such as Sir Chris Hoy and AC/DC's Brian Johnson, joining drivers such as David Brabham and Tiff Needell and, appropriately, John Cooper's grandson Charlie Cooper. On Sunday 5 September over 200 Minis met up at Steyne Gardens in Worthing, West Sussex, for a magnificent day out at the seaside. It's a free-to-enter, laid-back, charity fundraising event, hosted by West Sussex MC. It takes place across the road from the seafront, near to local shops, so there's plenty around to do and see, as well as looking at a fine array of Minis. For COVID safety reasons the club only knew five weeks beforehand that they could go ahead with the event so they really pulled the stops out for Mini fans and the charity beneficiaries: St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House hospices. I have a 1967 Morris Mini-Minor which is in totally original condition with a genuine 33,000 miles on the clock. I would like to tune the engine discreetly to make it a bit more responsive and safer in today's traffic conditions. I do not want to replace the 11/4” SU carb, filter, manifold or exhaust and any other upgrades to the engine must be internal so that everything still looks original. I would like to gas-flow the head but am unsure as to how much work is possible before the 1/” SU runs out of puff. What are the power limits of the carb and exhaust? Many of us will have experienced the disappointment of planned holidays and Mini adventures being cancelled due to the pandemic. My wife Emilia and I had hoped to travel to Italy for the International Mini Meeting and should have been touring in France, accompanied by our Citroën 2CVowning friends, Patrick and Louise. As this couldn't happen we decided to take a staycation trip to the West of England. In true Monte Carlo Rally style, cars started from different points; the Citroën crew from East Grinstead and the Mini team from Guildford. We met at Holmsley, in Hampshire, in good time for lunch at the Old Station Tea Rooms and we even managed to see some of the famous New Forest ponies as we continued westward in convoy. After a year off it was extra special to be back at Stanford Hall for Mini Fest on 19 September. Rain, on and off, during the first hour or so of the show thankfully held off for the rest of the day which was mainly sunny and made the concours competitors happier. This annual event at scenic Stanford Hall in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, organised by British Mini Club, showcases some fantastic Minis in its show 'n' shine and concours. We also enjoyed seeing many other Minis around the showground and the fun displays on club stands embraced the 'cops and robbers' theme.
