Mini Spares Midlands, set up between Mini Spares of Potters Bar and David Manners Group 24 years ago, closed on 31 October by mutual agreement. “David Manners group is concentrating on its core business of Jaguar and MG, etc, and Mini is coming back in-house to Potters Bar or York," explained Justin Jeffery of Mini Spares. "Over the years we have created an online presence that meant that Midlands, whom had no online store of their own, were only dealing with trade customers and counter customers. Disc brakes I have just bought a 1987 Mini. It is in very sound condition and pretty much standard. I love the car and plan to keep it long-term but I really do not like the standard factory 12” wheels. I have looked at 12”alloys but have come to the conclusion that I would like to put the Mini on 10” rims. Is it possible to fit 7.5” discs to the existing hubs, along with the calipers, or will I need the complete S front brakes? I know the drive flanges are different on the 8.4 to the S brakes. It is I think true to say that Cars and Car Conversions magazine was the closest it was possible to get to MiniWorld back in the late 60s and throughout the 1970s. It was, aft er all, the magazine from which MiniWorld evolved. There were many features about Minis and well-known Mini names like David Vizard and the late Clive Trickey were regular contributors. Many of the features were written about competition Minis as a lot more people competed in Minis back then and they were the inspiration for many a Mini enthusiast, myself included, to build a fast-road, modified Mini. Bomber County Minis is 10 years old this year and we had been looking forward to celebrating at a number of different shows before COVID-19 stopped that. We had to entertain ourselves so we teamed up with Trent Valley Mini Owners Club to do a tour of RAF bases in Lincolnshire. Over three weekends in the summer we visited a number of current and former RAF bases around the shire, covering approximately 150 miles. As we were in the Minis we could maintain social distancing. The tours were completed in convoys, following a set route. Some of the sites were no longer in existence and just a memorial was there. Others were museums and some were active RAF bases. From 1969, starting with the UK Clubman, some Mini instrument pods were mounted in the driver’s line of sight but, even when it comes to the very last Mini speedometers, some consider them to be ‘old hat’ when compared to the modern day instrument functionality we now take for granted. Many do not have trip meters, let alone other features often seen on modern, electronic types. Mechanical speedometer cables are troublesome, should the cable routing be sub-optimal and, when the cable is worn, it can produce the all too familiar wobbling of the speedo needle. Virtually all Minis will require reconditioning or rebuilding of the engine at some point in their lives. If the car is being restored it is a very good time to do this as, unless only a minor amount of restoration work is being undertaken, the engine will need to be removed from the car. It is well within the capability of most owners to strip the engine to component parts, if they choose to, and this will save some money, whatever course of action is taken from there. Items such as the crank and block need to be examined and measured for wear by an engineering shop and any machining and engineering work carried out. A regular on the pages of MiniWorld, Terry Cheverall has built a range of weird and wonderful Minis. His bread and butter work is restoring classic cars in Basildon, Essex, but in his spare time he enjoys building unique Minis with his dad, Andrew. Minis built by them, which have graced our pages, include a six-wheeled Pick-up and a four-door Mini saloon. In the absence of this year’s Goodwood Revival the village of Amberley, West Sussex, staged its own Revival on 12 September, a gloriously sunny Saturday. The event attracted a range of 45 classic cars, including 10 Minis, and raised £1,500 for maintenance work on the local church, St Michael’s. I organised the event with the help of my neighbour Mike Toynbee. The event came to life as a way of getting everyone out in their classic cars after a summer with no shows. It gave everyone the chance to use their cars and see friends whilst staying socially distanced. Once checked in, owners affixed plaques to their cars and enjoyed coffee and breakfast rolls on the cricket field. Cars then left Amberley at minute intervals to navigate an 85-mile route…
