As Editor-in-Chief of MILIEU and as a longtime interior designer, I make changes all of the time—on pages and in rooms. My favorite method for transforming the interiors of my home is to use slipcovers. I love their versatility, their informality, and the ease with which you can make a home feel new—but still familiar. I continue to be amazed by the many ways to make a slipcover—with pleats and skirting, trims or piping, fringes or tassels, or simply as a patterned or monochromatic fabric. A well-fitting slipcover is an elegant, tailored way to change up your furniture and your daily life. Marian McEvoy loves folk art, tramp art, and virtually any other art created by the human hand. And though she’s been creating her own original artwork for years, the fashion and design publishing icon wants to make one thing perfectly clear: “I’m not an artist,” she says, “I’m an artisan.” McEvoy, the founding editor of Elle Décor, a former editor of Women’s Wear Daily in Paris, and former editor-in-chief of House Beautiful, has been a respected and influential curator of style for decades. Her keen sense of design and composition are innate gifts honed over a lifetime in the visual arena; she’s now enjoying her second career as an artisan, creating whimsical collages of pressed flowers, leaves, and other natural elements at her home in New York’s Hudson River Valley.…

Maria Hummer-Tuttle understands the objects she owns—that they needn’t be valuable to be of value. Although she has long appreciated this perspective on the artworks, statuettes, jewelry, dishware—even the crayon drawings done by her grandchildren—in her possession, Hummer-Tuttle came to understand it in a profound way years ago while in her Los Angeles home. As she recounts in Objects of Desire (Vendome Press), an approaching brushfire threatened the house. During her weeklong trip to Luang Prabang in northern Laos, Helen Ballard observed a regular morning routine. Like many of the most devoted citizens of the historic city, noted for its centuries-old temples and neighborhoods of French Colonial-era residences, Ballard would roll out a rice mat on a curb—long before the first hints of dawn—and wait for the Buddhist monks to pass. WHENEVER Atlanta-based interior designer Jackye Lanham takes on a new project, she usually starts with a story to guide her approach to the décor. And in the case of the home she shares with her husband, William Lanham, in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, the narrative began from the ground up. “I’ve been working with other clients on the island for more than 20 years and, like a lot of people, I fell in love with the Low Country,” says Lanham. So, a few years ago, she and her husband bought land there to build a getaway retreat of their own. THE SECRET TO SOME families’ happiness is that they play board games together or picnic at the beach on weekends. Cris Briger and her two sons, Charles Peed and Pablo Briger, collect together, as well as share a spacious three-bedroom Palm Beach condominium. “We all love to collect things because we love the provenance of things and their history,” says Briger, who with her sons own Casa Gusto, a West Palm Beach emporium of distinctive objects and artworks old and new. “Historical stuff drives us crazy and if we can’t find that certain old something we like, we go ahead and make it,” she adds. During the Gilded Age, a 40-year period after the Civil War that resulted in phenomenal monetary gain for a coterie of entrepreneurs, Stanford White—one of the most accomplished architects in the United States—was at the forefront of artistic talents. White (1853–1906) demonstrated both an extraordinary eye for design and a willingness to work at the behest of people with immense resources. Families such as the Vanderbilts, Astors, Whitneys, and Morgans turned to White to build elaborate residential and commercial structures as lasting monuments to their financial success and limitless aspirations. Despite the absence of wealth in his parents’ home, White, who was born in what is now Manhattan’s East Village, had exposure even as a young person to individuals of influence and artistic sensibilities. THE BRITISH HAVE COME Sometimes, successful businesses arise more by accident than by plan. Just a few years ago, Daniel Weisbach, along with his partner in life and in business, Brian Moss, began to forge professional relationships with British brands. “It wasn’t really our intention to focus solely on British makers,” says Weisbach, “but it just kind of happened. A variety of U.K. brands, family businesses really, believed in us, and they gave us a chance.” Suddenly, British designers such as Rose Uniacke, Marthe Armitage, George Smith, and others, became interested in having Weisbach and Moss represent them in the United States. WITH AN EARLY interest in the decorative arts, Bill Gardner has been collecting his entire life—from valuable antique furniture to colorful vintage Mexican pottery. The longtime Houston antiques dealer and proprietor of W. Gardner, Ltd., even recalls the first antique he ever purchased. “I must have been 12 or 13,” he says, “and I remember going into a shop and buying an English blue and white teacup and saucer for $3.00. It was pretty, and it prompted a desire for antiques that I think was somehow ingrained in me.” Gardner grew up in Corpus Christi, near the Mexican border. “You may not think of South Texas as a bastion of culture, but there were incredible well-educated, well-traveled people there with impeccable taste who hired the best decorators. AS A SEASONED ARCHITECT, Jeremy Corkern is used to realizing finished projects for his clients. But for his own home, an 1850 New Orleans townhouse, Corkern continued to add to his wish list of things he wanted to accomplish but just didn’t—including laying a checkerboard floor in the kitchen, redesigning the kitchen with new cabinetry, choosing slipcovers for his furniture, selecting curtain hardware, and designing custom bookcases for his towers of books. “I was like the cobbler’s kid with no shoes,” Corkern says, “until I finally reached out to my interior designer friend and colleague Shannon Bowers and said, ‘I need your help.’” Now that all of the rooms and the courtyard of his residence in the city’s Garden District are finished and furnished, Bowers, a Dallas-based interior designer and…
