you, our readers, for many reasons, but one in particular is it includes a very special feature about our MILIEU family. When I first envisioned this magazine several years ago, it was my intention to bring together and foster a family-like staff made up of people who would bring his or her own strengths and experiences to help create MILIEU—a place where everyone contributes, where no one is more talented than another, and where all input is valued. I feel such joy in this very realization now. Scotland’s Drummond Castle was recently cast in a starring role. Such is its likeness to Versailles, complete with terraces linked by staircases, a magnificent parterre, sculptural topiary, and busts and fountains, that it served as the (smaller) set location for the archetypal French garden in the historical television drama Outlander. The imposing Scottish castle keep and its later chateau-style mansion house preside over a parterre of spectacular proportion. While visitors are struck by the sheer geometry of the plantings and manicured shapes, Drummond is particularly memorable when its grounds are whitened with winter frost. The formal garden design was devised in the seventeenth century to beautify the fortified stronghold, a sober edifice built in the late 1490s by the first Lord Drummond. WITH ALL THE images and messages one is constantly bombarded with in modern life, it’s a relief to enter a serene, tranquil home that invites the visitor to relax and rest in comfort. In Austin, Christina Cole Abboud, known for her quiet, minimal interiors, created a sophisticated scheme for new homeowners that offers a welcome escape from the cacophony and clutter of the outside world. “Our aesthetic as a design firm is very restrained,” Abboud emphasizes. BY TOUCH When Emma Cassi fashions curtains made of silk for her home, she anticipates the day they will unravel. “When silk stays in the sun for too long, it starts to fall apart,” the fiber artist says from her home in Madrid, “and that’s what I really like. I take those fine threads and start to make one of my fabric bowls.” For years, Cassi was known for her jewelry creations, but after feeling the effects of her artisanship in her arms and hands, she embraced other mediums, notably fiber art, rechristening her one-woman company, Silk by Emma Cassi. The truest domestic portrait of an art dealer is to see what they live with at home. While MILIEU often goes into homes of designers to reveal their styles, in For Art’s Sake (Rizzoli; $85), writer Tiqui Atencio Demirdjian, along with photographer Jean-François Jaussaud, brings readers inside the residences of art dealers to show what hangs on their walls, rests atop plinths, and fills tabletops. SECRETLY, BEATA HEUMAN was especially drawn to the Notting Hill townhouse. “It was one of my favorite projects,” confides the London-based, Swedish-born interior designer who is creating ripples in the design world for her uniquely lighthearted—but seriously functional—style. The early Victorian brick house in London features generous rooms, high ceilings, and a smart floorplan, plus enviable architectural details worth preserving. NOT LONG AFTER designer Roger Higgins finished the interiors of his home in the West End neighborhood of Nashville, he and his wife, Ann Shipp, decided to sell. “The house had been featured in a magazine, and a reader who saw it called a real estate agent with an offer to buy,” says Higgins. Even though they had nowhere to go, the industrious couple found a new home—a 1950s ranch—in Belle Meade, a lovely city in Tennessee known for its historic architecture and equestrian legacy. Eileen Gray worked with geometric forms to create furniture designs in chromed steel and leather. The E-1027 adjustable side table was designed for Gray’s own home. Its variable height is facilitated by a circular base that supports a cantilevered glass top. The Bibendum lounge chair was inspired by the namesake character from the Michelin tire company.
