From Beyond the Black Rainbow (Panos Cosmatos, 2010) and Martha Marcy May Marlene (Sean Durkin, 2011), to Sound of My Voice (Zal Batmanglij, 2011) and The Sacrament (Ti West, 2013), films revolving around cults have been in vogue for some time now. One Eyed Girl (2014), the feature debut of Adelaide-based director Nick Matthews, appears to come at the tail end of that cycle but, the zeitgeist being what it is, is just as likely to be at the forefront of the next. Of course, there’s no shame in making a film on a subject that lots of other filmmakers are exploring.1 What matters is what has attracted you to the material, your approach, and what you’re doing with it that other films aren’t.
