The subject line in the email from Gary Carter read, “Possibly Most Incredible 24 Hours in History of our Sport,” and it immediately grabbed my attention. Why wouldn’t it? Carter holds several IGFA world records for billfish on light tackle, and I knew it had to be something really special for him to make such a claim. And it was. The message described two incredible days aboard Hookin’ Bull off New Zealand: “Just got off the phone with Guy Jacobsen and John Batterton … in a 24-hour period they caught the pending 30-pound IGFA world-record swordfish, 555.6 pounds, and then the pending 20-pound IGFA world-record sword, 593 pounds. The existing records were 392 pounds caught in 1976 and 310 pounds caught in 1979, respectively.” On the first day, Jacobsen followed…
editor@marlinmag.com FISHING WITH VETERANS I just wanted to drop a note in response to Sam White’s article “Giving Back: Billfishing With Veterans” [November 2016] — very well done on all parts for promoting this to the fishing community! Over the past 10 years or so, the boats in the Canyon Runner fleet have taken out about 200 veterans to go offshore fishing both to the Northeast Canyons and giant tuna fishing off North Carolina. In the past several years, we also participated in a local shark tournament, which raises money for what I believe is a great cause: Operation Restored Warrior. We have also raised about $50,000 for the organization at our Canyon Runner Offshore Seminar Series. There is nothing better than giving back to these great American heroes. Shown…
GRANDER SKIES Tony Carpenter snapped this incredible shot of an estimated 1,000-pound black marlin. He says: “What makes this fish even more interesting is a second hook located on the right side of its mouth, and we hooked it on the left side with a circle hook. We didn’t even notice the other hook until we looked back at the photos.” LOCATION Shaun Wembridge caught the fish aboard Hellraiser 2 with Capt. Steve Ahlers while at Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Mitch Roffer has a dedicated mission: He wants you to catch more fish, period. He founded Roffer’s Ocean Fishing Forecasting Service, better known as ROFFS, in 1987 based on that desire. Since then, his combination of satellite data overlaid with text analyses of the current and expected conditions has become the benchmark, a road map to finding the productive fishing grounds offshore. Roffer was born in Yonkers, New York, but escaped the cold to attend the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science, where he earned his doctorate with an emphasis on fisheries oceanography and satellite remote sensing. He understood that fishermen needed a way to interpret satellite data in a way that was understandable — and the fishing world hasn’t been the same since. When did…
From A-list celebrities to fantastic food and entertainment, few would argue that legendary football coach-turnedbroadcaster Jimmy Johnson hosts one of the world’s finest sport- fishing tournaments. The Jimmy Johnson’s National Billfish Championship has quickly become one event that’s not to be missed in a season packed full of high-profile sailfish tournaments. But Johnson is not one to rest on his laurels either. This year, Johnson and his title sponsor at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino upped the ante and offered a guaranteed prize purse of $1 million, in addition to the giant NFL championship-style rings and entrance into Johnson’s Ring of Honor of past winners — hallowed ground, worthy of any serious tournament angler’s attention. The week’s festivities kicked off with a welcome party at the Seminole Hard…
