I HAVE two firearms that have above normal value to me; one is a Mannlicher Schoenauer (1922) in 6.5x54mm (no, it’s not a carbine) and the other is a Unique Model L ‘Combo’ pistol/carbine (mid-1960s) in .22lr. I have spent a small fortune on the Mannlicher. For example, about 20 years ago, the die set cost me R950 (the price tag is still on the case), while that of a mainstream calibre like .308Win cost only R180. I PREFER hunting with one or more companions, as I like to share the experience, and I enjoy the evening campfire tales. But when I’m the sole occupant of my camp, I draw on my own thoughts and memories for entertainment. SINCE moving to the UK I’ve been impressed by the emphasis placed on the use of dogs for finding wounded and lost game. Used correctly, they’re a vital part of the hunt experience, and often a key factor between success and failure. Dogs are used in parts of Africa, and more particularly so in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. To South Africa’s north in the British colonies of old, hunting with dogs was illegal. The reason for this was to try and thwart the tribal poaching scourge where dogs were used to good effect.
