I used to work for a startup in an environment surrounded by many other startups. It was a time of immersive learning for me. The term “break things”—abridged from Facebook’s old motto “Move fast and break things”—really did get thrown around a lot. While Facebook has since upgraded that motto to “Move fast with stable infrastructure” (distinctly less catchy), the cliché “break things” is a catchphrase crutch: women and men in tech, serial entrepreneurs and venture capitalists dispense it very often. The establishments were Aliyaa, Beta KL, Bijan Bar & Restaurant, Concubine KL, Jawi House, Siti Li Dining, The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar, and The Regent Chinese Cuisine. Guests arrived dressed beautifully in traditional qipaos and retro outfits as the theme was Wong Kar Wai’s classic In The Mood For Love set in 1960s Hong Kong.
