Thought Finder would stay largely the same after all this time? Not quite! Here are the key improvements to the file manager in Mojave. Gallery view Choose View > as Gallery (or press command +4) to try the new view, which is good for browsing any kind of file that Finder can preview. It can be difficult to tell apart items in the carousel at the bottom, especially folders when navigating deeper in this view. In 2016, iOS 9.3 added a feature called Night Shift that, during the evening, ‘automatically adjusts colours to the warmer end of the spectrum, making the display easier on your eyes’. Since macOS 10.12.4, it’s also available on Macs (excluding those made before 2012). There have been concerns for years about the influence of artificial light on circadian rhythm, the body’s natural 24-hour cycle. In 1996, epidemiologists Richard G Stevens and Scott Davis noted that ‘the normal nocturnal melatonin rise in humans can be suppressed by light of sufficient intensity.’ We now know melatonin production is regulated by cells in the retina containing melanopsin. Why does my new iPhone SIM show my old number? Sometimes when you’ve changed both service and SIM, your old number may still be shown. There are big upgrades to Siri and the ability to get things done in iOS 12. After using the new system for a while, new ways to interact with your apps will appear on the Lock screen and in Spotlight search in the form of Siri Shortcuts. These help you get things done with less fuss as you go about your day, enabling you to repeat earlier actions with one tap. The suggestions you’re given in those places are based on things your device recognises you do often. Those that are shown may vary by the time of day and your location. Tapping one might take you to a place deep within an app you use often, or do a complete task – say, order a coffee – without opening…

Your first shortcut ran pre-baked actions with a tap, but the app’s real power is when acting on data. Let’s continue with an example like the one Apple demoed when it unveiled Shortcuts. We’ll message a family member with our expected arrival time at home, get directions from Maps, set our home’s climate, and play a radio station. It really is something special, scoring a raft of style points over the slightly boring-looking Eve Room, and its particulate matter sensor is not to be sniffed at. In World War II, when the Americans were looking to make their aircraft hardier, they studied the locations of bullet holes on the returned planes. The holes tended to be clustered in certain areas, so it was suggested that, if these areas took the most damage, they should be more armoured. Rather than going to System Preferences’ General pane to switch to or from Dark Mode, you can easily build your own shortcut to toggle it from the keyboard, thanks to the one new action in Mojave’s version of Automator: Change System Appearance. Accents and highlights Ever changed the colour that’s used to highlight selected text, but been disappointed that your choice also affects the colour that’s used to indicate the item in the menu bar or control in a window that has the focus? In command > System Preferences > General, Mojave offers two colour options. The accent colour is the one used for menus, controls and their like. Make sure you set it first, as the highlight colour is set to match it automatically; you can then change it to be different. Note that some apps are inconsistent: in Notes, say, the selected folder uses the accent colour, while the selected note uses the highlight colour. Understand iOS gestures A tap is a brief contact of (usually) one finger on your device’s screen. To drag is to move a finger across the screen to scroll or pan around content. Swipe means move one or more fingers across an item or the screen, then let go. A flick is like swiping, but it’s quicker, and is often used to scroll content more quickly. Pinch means move two fingers together or apart, usually to zoom in or out. Touch and hold means lightly rest your finger on an item and wait for a reaction. Can I start a 2018 MacBook Pro in Target Disk Mode? Yes, provided you connect it to a Mac running High Sierra or Mojave using a good Thunderbolt 3 cable. One neat way you can use the Shortcuts app is by using your images from the Photos library and combining them in creative ways. You can, for example, create collages from series of photos you’ve taken, a grid of imagery, or even a wall of album artwork. This example makes a grid of recent photos. Last issue, we looked it ways to keep that castle secure inside and out, but keeping its contents safe – specifically those living, breathing contents that make a house a home – is another matter entirely.
