We’ve tested very fast external SSDs, but nothing quite like the X5. It combines a Thunderbolt 3 connection with NVMe (non-volatile memory express) storage, like the MacBook Pro.
That enables impressive transfer rates. In our tests, we observed a peak transfer rate of 2,516MB/sec when reading data, and 1,866MB/sec when writing. Somewhat perversely, those figures are simultaneously impressive, as they are faster than (USB) SSDs we’ve tried, yet slower than expected, as Samsung claims read and write rates up to 2,800MB/sec and 2,300MB/sec, respectively.
As with any drive, mean average transfer rates are slower, but they’re still very good compared to USB 3.1 Gen 2 SSDs: 1,978MB/sec and 1,446MB/sec.
The X5’s case is larger and curvier than many external SSDs.…
