I wasn’t allowed to take Home Economics in high school. I’m not entirely sure why, but as a sensitive Black boy growing up in Louisiana, this was somehow the greatest slight to my creative spirit since my 4th grade wishing troll obsession was forsworn. Life at home was rough, but drawing, painting, and art were always encouraged. I didn’t know anyone who could sew (certainly not any boys) but I knew that quilts were considered precious things.
