How did you first get into quilting? I began my quilting journey in 2017 after my mother-in-law gifted me my very first sewing machine. But I actually come from quite an extended family of sewists. Lucina, my great-grandmother, was a quilter and sewist all her life. I never really took up the hobby until I was given my own sewing machine though. I vividly recall my mother-in-law teaching me how to make a tea towel, my less-than-perfect scissor cutting skills (since I didn't know what a rotary cutter was) and being proud of my first make. I’m thinking about starting a new IG account called @QuiltingFails. The feed would be filled with quilters across the world sharing quilting mistakes (poor colour choice, imperfect points, backward piecing…) and the captions could be the lessons that quilters learned from making those mistakes. “There are no mistakes, only lessons learned” – Robin Sharma Here’s what I like about the idea: Firstly, sharing mistakes would be a refreshing change of pace from the perfection that we see in our feeds. Why is it that inspiration seems to make itself scarce at the very moment I’m in desperate need of it? Whether I’m trying to come up with a new quilt design or trying to find the energy to start sewing, creative inspiration can be impossible to conjure up at times! Here are my favourite ways to summon up that energy and tap into my inspiration for whatever I’m trying to tackle next… 1 SWATCH IT UP Whenever I have to step outside of my comfort zone, I’m often immediately frozen by indecision. So, when it comes to machine quilting, I’ve started making swatch samples! I set aside five- to six-inch scraps of fabric from the front of the quilt and make a handful of mini quilt sandwiches to try out…

So many of our favourite quilt blocks include units with 45-degree angles. We all know the ‘hands-on’ method of drawing a diagonal line, stitching along it and trimming away excess fabric and dog-ears, but if you have lots of blocks to make, this takes time! Our handy tool trims away excess fabric while adding a ›in seam allowance. It works for Flying Geese, Snowballs, square-in-a-square blocks and Corner-square Triangles! USING YOUR 45-DEGREE CORNER TOOL 1 Cut out the rectangles or squares required for the block as described in the pattern you’re working from.
