French-Swedish couple Charles Henry and Elin Petronella, founders of Charles and Elin embroidery, met in Paris seven years ago, and have been creatively inseparable ever since. “I had started my embroidery Instagram account (@petronella.art) just a couple of weeks before we met”, says Elin: “I was stitching my first commission when Charles became intrigued and wanted to try it out himself. MATERIALS Slip-on canvas trainers: white Stranded cotton: 1 skein each of black, grey, yellow Pearl cotton, size 5: gold Adhesive soluble stabilser Thimble (optional) Basic embroidery kit STITCHES USED Backstitch, Brick Stitch, French Knot, Split Stitch NOTES Find the template on p72. For this project we recommend using a size 3 and a size 5 crewel/ embroidery needle. 01 Using the templates, trace 20 bees, six left-hand honeycomb pieces and six right-hand honeycomb pieces onto soluble stabiliser. Cut around the individual bee and honeycomb shapes and then peel away the backing paper. Using the step image as a guide for positioning, stick the bee designs onto the shoes. GETTING STARTED Prepare your sewing machine by attaching a freemotion embroidery (AKA darning) foot. Next, drop the feed dogs – the mechanism that grips and pulls fabric through your sewing machine. Your sewing machine manual should tell you how to do this, but there is usually a lever to pull at the back of the machine. Start with test fabric to make sure the tension is correct and the bottom thread doesn’t show though. Remember the stitch length is determined by the speed at which you stitch – the faster you move the fabric, the longer the stitches will be. HOW TO TRANSFER TRACING Place light-coloured and fine fabrics over the design and trace over it. For thicker or dark-coloured fabrics, a light source such as a window or lightbox makes this process much simpler. TRANSFER PENS AND PENCILS Choose a colour that will show up on the fabric. Use a permanent marker if the stitching will cover the lines, or a removable marker if you need to erase the lines afterwards – test on a scrap of fabric first so you know it can be removed. IRON-ON TRANSFERS Press your fabric, then place your transfer sheet ink side down on top and press with a hot, dry iron (taking care with heat-sensitive fabrics).
