GETTING STARTED Prepare your sewing machine by attaching a freemotion (AKA darning) foot. Next, drop the feed dogs – the mechanism that grips and pulls fabric through your sewing machine. Your machine manual should tell you how to do this. Then, mount the fabric in a hoop. Do this in reverse to the normal way, with the inner hoop uppermost. Make sure the fabric is really tight in the hoop – this stops the threads from warping and makes the process easier. Start with test fabric to make sure the tension is correct and the bottom thread doesn’t show though. Remember, the stitch length is determined by the speed at which you move the fabric – the faster you go, the longer the stitches will be. When machine embroidering, try…

HOW TO TRANSFER TRACING Place light-coloured and fine fabrics over the design and trace over it. For thicker or dark-coloured fabrics, a light source such as a window or lightbox makes this process much simpler. TRANSFER PENS AND PENCILS Choose a colour that will show up on the fabric. Use a permanent marker if the stitching will cover the lines, or a removable marker if you need to erase the lines afterwards – test on a scrap of fabric first so you know it can be removed. IRON-ON TRANSFERS Press your fabric, then place your transfer sheet ink side down on top and press with a hot, dry iron (taking care with heat-sensitive fabrics). NOTES This stitch is worked between two parallel lines which have been drawn using an erasable pen. We’ve worked this stitch using two colours of stranded cotton but you can also work it using a single colour if you prefer. 01 Stitch a group of three 01 vertical Straight Stitches coming up on the top line and going down to the bottom line – as shown. 02 Leave a small gap and 02 then add another group of three stitches. NOTE This stitch is a simple alternative to French Knot. 01 Begin by bringing the needle up through the fabric where you want your knot to be positioned. Make a small circular loop with the working thread as shown in the step photo above. 02 Next, take the needle through the loop going under the thread where it emerges from the fabric and then going over the loop of the working thread. 03 Hold the loop to the fabric with your thumb to prevent it from tightening too early, and then gently pull to create the knot, letting go as it forms against the surface of the fabric. NOTES This is also known as Blanket Stitch Honeycomb. Honeycomb Stitch is a great stitch for filling in large areas. 01 Work a diagonal stitch between the first and second line – leaving a loop. Come up on the top line, catching the loop to form a Blanket Stitch. Repeat to form a row, as shown. 02 Bring the needle back up on the left-hand side, moving diagonally downwards to the left of the first Blanket Stitch. Kantha is a centuries-old style of Indian embroidery that uses a simple Running Stitch to upcycle scraps of old saris into one large, patchwork item – and The Florence Quilt from Kantha Beach is a gorgeous example of the style in its modern guise! Helen Wilde is obsessed with the ocean. As we chat over Zoom, it’s hard to miss the seascape hanging behind the Derbyshirebased embroidery artist. “There’s a clam shell up there that’s the size of my head!”, she laughs, pointing offscreen and gleefully describing how the postman is delivering seashells for her collection at an increasing rate.
