For Idaho-based artist, Jennifer Cardenas Riggs, embroidery is the “tactile medium” that brings her graphic design training, style and spirituality together. Having learned how to stitch at the age of eight, it was a hobby that she continued into adolescence and then revisited again as a college student studying visual arts. “I realised that I could use the skill that I was taught as a young person and meld it with my own personal designs. Once that clicked, I started creating pieces to give away to friends and it’s been pure love ever since,” says Jennifer. “As a graphic designer, there’s only so far you can go while drawing up designs on a computer screen. GETTING STARTED Machine embroidery doesn’t always need to be done on a dedicated machine! You can create machine-made designs using freemotion embroidery on almost any domestic model. You simply need to drop your feed dogs – this is what guides the fabric through the machine – and place your fabric in a hoop to help you grip your stitching while moving it manually through the machine. Then, you’re ready to start experimenting with freemotion machine embroidery. For this fun cocktail hoop, I combined simple freemotion techniques with appliqué and a little hand stitching to create a piece that makes the most of colour and shade for a multi-dimensional finish. YOUR BASIC EMBROIDERY KIT For the majority of the projects in this issue you will need the following items. There are different types available, so read on to choose the correct materials for each project. Fabric Thread Needles Scissors Embroidery hoop Transfer pens/pencils FABRIC Embroidery can be worked on a wide variety of fabrics or readymade items. It’s best to choose fabrics with a fairly smooth surface as heavily-textured surfaces will prevent the stitches from lying flat. For beginners, it’s best to start with a 100% plain-weave cotton. Having a dedicated embroidery machine means that I can guarantee almost perfect results in every project, especially if the piece I’m making is relatively simple. However, from time to time I also like to let my more artistic side out, with a little freemotion. Using a regular domestic sewing machine with the feed dogs lowered, freemotion embroidery gives you total control over your design, letting you sketch out your ideas with thread as if you were drawing. It can take a little practise to master but that’s all part of the fun – combining different fabrics, threads and techniques to see what you can create. One thing I love to try is playing with colour to create shape and depth within my work. I can use stitches to build up…

GETTING STARTED Prepare your sewing machine by attaching a freemotion embroidery or darning foot. Next, drop the feed dogs – the mechanism that grips and pulls fabric through your sewing machine. Your sewing machine manual should tell you how to do this, but there’s usually a lever at the back of your machine for it. Next, place your fabric in a hoop, taking care not to overstretch it but making sure it is taut. Do this in reverse to the normal way, with the inner hoop uppermost. Start with test fabric to make sure the tension is correct and the bottom thread doesn’t show through. Remember the stitch length is determined by the speed at which you stitch – the faster you go, the shorter your stitches will be. When…

HOW TO TRANSFER TRACING Place light-coloured and fine fabrics over the design and trace over it. For thicker or dark-coloured fabrics a light source such as a window or lightbox makes this process much simpler. TRANSFER PENS AND PENCILS Choose a colour that will show up on the fabric. Use a permanent marker if the stitching will cover the lines, or a removable marker if you need to erase the lines afterwards – test first on a scrap of fabric so you know it can be removed. IRON-ON TRANSFERS Press your fabric, then place your transfer sheet ink side down on top and press with a hot, dry iron (taking care with heat-sensitive fabrics). Allotment, A Bird’s Eye View has taken textile artist Collette Kinley on quite a journey. Her ‘sowing’, as she has joked, reached staggering numbers on social media and won the Instagram Saatchi Gallery Textile Takeover. Completing the piece in lockdown, the title became very important to her, alluding to “the freedom we were used to before, alongside the increasing awareness of our natural world.” Nature is a huge source of inspiration for Collette.
