GETTING STARTED Freemotion embroidery doesn’t need to be limited to just working on one layer of fabric. If you add some wadding behind then you can work freemotion quilting. This gives your design added dimension and practicality too. You can use this method for decorating a quilt or any project using wadding like our pair of quilted potholders. If you want to trace the design onto the fabric this is best done before you add the wadding and backing then you can use a lightbox and pencil. If, however you have already layered your fabric up then there a few different transfer methods to use. A really effective method is to create your own stencil. YOUR BASIC EMBROIDERY KIT For the majority of the projects in this issue you will need the following items. There are different types available, so read on to choose the correct materials for each project. Fabric Thread Needles Scissors Embroidery hoop Transfer pens/pencils FABRIC Embroidery can be worked on a wide variety of fabrics or readymade items. It’s best to choose fabrics with a fairly smooth surface as heavily textured surfaces will prevent the stitches from lying flat. For beginners, it’s best to start with a 100% plain weave cotton. Ciara LeRoy’s creativity is boundless. The Kentucky-based artist and designer has attracted a steady following for her vibrant stitched typography, but she’s also a painter, a lettering artist, fashion upcycler and a huge nail art fan. She’s guaranteed to inspire, regularly invokes a smile, and more often than not, she’ll also make you think. Ciara didn’t actually start embroidering until a few years ago. “I wanted to translate my lettering into a new medium,” she says. “Something more dynamic, tactile and fine art focused. HOW TO TRANSFER TRACING Place light-coloured and fine fabrics over the design and trace over it. For thicker or dark-coloured fabrics a light source such as a window or lightbox makes this process much simpler. TRANSFER PENS AND PENCILS Choose a colour that will show up on the fabric. Use a permanent marker if the stitching will cover the lines, or a removable marker if you need to erase the lines afterwards – test first on a scrap of fabric so you know it can be removed. IRON-ON TRANSFERS Press your fabric, then place your transfer sheet ink side down on top and press with a hot, dry iron (taking care with heat-sensitive fabrics). Found florals Flowers stitched on tulle… what a dreamy idea. We were bowled over when we spotted one of Olga Prinku’s hoops hanging in a window with the sunlight drifting through. Jumping straight on her website we found tutorials that show us she does it. Olga makes works of art from dried botanicals, placing them into beautiful arrangements before stitching them onto the fabric. She even shares how to dry the found florals. You might assume that machine embroidery should be worked onto woven fabrics such as cotton and wool. Well, I also love to stitch fantastic designs onto unusual materials like leather, suede, and even plush velvet. With a little extra preparation and care, it’s easy to get those same stunning results. Leather is a great base for stitched designs – it’s strong, hard-wearing, and the flat, even surface allows the threads to stand out. When picking a piece of leather to work on, try to find something pliable. Thick, stiff leathers will be difficult to work through and may even result in broken needles (and frayed tempers!). Conversely, super-thin options such as lambskin may prove too delicate to work with – try to find something in the middle. Velvet is also…
