My love for music started at a young age. I started playing guitar and singing when I was nine years old and I was completely hooked! I am by no means an athlete. I enjoy cycling and, when I need a change from the saddle, I jog a few kilometres and clear my mind. I have always peppered my schedule with pilates, step classes, hip-hop lessons, and other activities that get a sweat going. When I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in June 2014, though, this schedule took on a very different nature. My twice-weekly 40km cycles were replaced by hours spent with specialists in oncology, appointments with surgeons, and seemingly endless days of recovery after the two operations (to remove the malignant gland and tumours) and the radiation treatment. A few months passed between having my total thyroidectomy and receiving the hormone-replacement medication (thanks to a worldwide shortage of radioactivity, which delayed treatment). This meant…

They found that among the 8 300 kids in the group who were diagnosed with ADHD, taking a stimulant medication (methylphenidate) as your son does doubled the risk of developing cardiovascular problems. NUTRITION EDUCATION MAY PREVENT BREAST CANCER Recent research has found that nutrition education focused on reducing red meat consumption and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption may reduce the recurrence of breast cancer. In a small study from Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil, 18 breast-cancer patients were educated for 12 months on proper nutrition. The 75-patient control group did not receive any education. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer patients in Brazil is only 58,4%. The patients in the intervention group consumed 50% less red and processed meat than their peers in the control group. In the time period of the study, the control group patients had a body weight two times greater and a body mass index (BMI) three times higher than those in the intervention group.…
