A year after everyone else, I’ve been having my own version of a brat summer. It’s been so much tamer than singer Charli xcx intended when she launched her zeitgeist-defining 2024 album, but I’ve been changing things up, with a desire to live more freely, with less stuff and to embrace the possibility. That’s seen me declutter, move house unexpectedly back to London from Somerset and just generally questing for a sense of newness and adventure. This mood is influencing the decor styles I’m drawn to – I want fun, I want fabulous, I want furniture that’s easy to move around when I’m suddenly entertaining more guests. Of all the wonders on display at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, what are the chances a hardware collection would catch our eye? Turns out when Sydney design studio YSG is behind it, the odds are pretty high. A highlight – literally – of this year’s Milan Design Week was Edra’s presentation of Gems, a collection of nine fabrics that twinkled like a starry sky (or indeed like gems in their prettiest form), covering its sofas and shimmering under spotlights in a grand palazzo. this five-bedroom Edwardian house in southwest London has not had your standard architectural refit. It’s not been given a side return infill, nor had a glass box plonked on the back. But then McLaren Excell is not your standard residential architectural firm – instead it makes single-storey country farmhouses out of golden ironstone or fortress-like city homes clad in rich, grey Danish Petersen bricks. Q I want to wallpaper my cloakroom but don’t know where to start – how do I choose a print that works with a marble vanity and how do I ensure that it’s durable? Cloakrooms are actually one of my favourite spaces to decorate. My style is quite pared back and my palette is pretty minimalist, but with a cloakroom you have the opportunity to be a little more wild. CRAFT WORK ‘I always wanted to be a shopkeeper,’ says Luci Noel, founder of north Londonbased homeware and design store Fodder (previously known as Kentish Town Stores). Originally a hybrid initiative – coffee shop, coworking space and shopfront for handmade homeware made by local craftspeople – in 2024, Luci moved the brand on from the hospitality side, rebranding as Fodder and relocating to an old antiques emporium in Hampstead ‘in a tiny courtyard, off a side street, that most people are unaware of’. The concept of Fodder is that products are small batch, handmade and direct from the maker. The key business ethos? ‘It’s about supporting the craft ecosystem,’ says Luci. OTTO TILES & DESIGN This year marks a decade since Otto Tiles & Design launched – and it’s done something rather special to celebrate. That something is the Kismet collection – a new range that draws from the rich visual language of the ancient, egalitarian Anatolian settlement of Çatalhöyük in Turkey, and from which a percentage of proceeds will be donated to Malala Fund, a charity supporting girls’ education and gender equality initiatives around the world. SEAMLESS SINKS When stone looks this good, who would want to interrupt it with a sink? Not DNA Design Lab, whose latest kitchen project leans into the trend for integrated sinks crisply cut in stunning stone. Using Antolini’s Camouflage marble – part of its Natural Stone Collection – the team has crafted a design where splashback, sink and surface are carved as one. With its tonal sandy-beige swirls that, says Antolini, ‘are almost like a slide of earth’s reliefs taken from space’, the stone brings a grounding, elemental quality to the scheme. Unbelievably, despite the grand period detailing on the cornicing and the implications of the Victorian era that come from the antique pendant light and antiqued island bench, this kitchen is all part of a new extension that designer Laura Stephens was involved with from the start. ‘The priority of this project was that it didn’t feel like a new box,’ Laura says. ‘It was important to take into consideration the flooring, finishes, ironmongery and cornicing, any details that could help make it seem a little more traditional while not remotely stuffy. PAY A VISIT More than a mere showroom, high-end Italian design company Visionnaire’s new London space is an architectural sight to be seen – it features an enormous curving staircase, golden metallic-clad walls and bespoke pieces that just beckon you to touch, to take a seat in, to admire. It seems like it was fate that brought designer Stephanie Thatenhorst to the space she now calls home — a sprawling apartment that she wasn’t sure was right for her and her two children. Stephanie had designed the interior of a client’s apartment in the building and he was hoping for a nice neighbour. Even as she politely declined, she knew that spaces like this have a way of calling you back. Three weeks later, Stephanie was still visualising a new life in the grand apartment. She checked again, hoping for an easy excuse to let it go – perhaps it would be already off the rental market – but surprise, surprise, it was still waiting. ‘At that moment, I knew,’ she says. ‘This was meant to be my home.’…

IN FULL VIEW Given the beautiful views out over the Gaspereau River Valley in Nova Scotia, it’s little wonder that Canadian studio Omar Gandhi Architects chose to make extensive glazing framed by weathered steel the focus of this project. Inspired by traditional hunting cabins, the bulk of the build is clad in Corten steel, perched atop seemingly slender legs – a silhouette that makes it feel imposing yet graceful. Cortijo Genesis ANDALUSIA, SPAIN IN A SENTENCE A place to immerse yourself in a sunny Palm Springs aesthetic – only without the long-haul flight. When designer Tom Morris first clapped eyes on what is now a trove of a kitchen, suffice to say that it did not look like this. ‘The house was previously owned by a developer and it was one of those homes where every last centimetre had been gobbled up, with every effort to grab and fill any bit of space. And it was shiny, with bright, bright lights. We wanted to create something with more charm and colour,’ he says. GETTING A GRIP As with all Retrouvius spaces, the aim in this kitchen was to bring salvaged, reclaimed and vintage materials back into use. Here, the studio found a new way to use old cigar moulds as a joinery detail under the countertop. But they’re more than just decoration or salvaging for the sake of it – they have enough grip to work as drawer pulls, too. ‘Various pieces of reclaimed architrave can be creatively repurposed in this manner,’ says studio founder Maria Speake, who cites the rich pinks of buildings in Marrakesh as the colour influence for this fresh and energising space. This serene and airy bathroom by Gunter & Co wasn’t always destined to look this dreamy. ‘It was a big space in a London townhouse – one that had previously been a bedroom – but the owners had so much they wanted to include that the floor plan was starting to be pinched,’ says studio founder Irene Gunter. ‘A double shower, a generous bath, a double vanity, WC, bidet and lots of storage… The wish list was as crammed as the room was going to be, turning the project into a study of every single millimetre.’ The inspiration for how to fit it all in came from downstairs, where curved walls had been built into the ground floor. ‘That gave us the idea to use them here, too, rounding edges…

It’s not often in a bathroom with an elegantly curved bath and gleaming inlaid wood panels hiding storage on the walls that the flooring would be the hero. But that’s the case in this scheme in Notting Hill, part of a project by Alex Dauley, where brown tones are balanced with strong white in a space that manages to be both fresh and refined. ‘It’s an elevated bathroom,’ says Alex. ‘The brief was to make it look expensive. trend one DAIRY MILK BROWN Perhaps it shouldn’t have been a surprise that so many design houses were all focusing on the velvety warmth of milk chocolate brown. Terracotta from two years ago became last year’s oxblood and now here we are – richer, deeper, even more comforting to wrap yourself and your home in. Spotted on tables, chairs and tiles, it truly is the decor colour of the year – use it as a flash next to earthy tones such as the brown-and-mustard stripes seen at Arflex, or take it floor to ceiling with the moreish ceramic tiles at Florim. 1 IN THE ZONE Madrid-based architecture, interiors and design firm Sierra + de la Higuera proposed the lattice screens in this project as a space divider. ‘At the entrance, right as you walk in, we created a welcoming nook,’ says Inés Sierra, co-founder and partner. ‘Since the living room has a large picture window facing the sea, the lattice serves as a permeable wall – letting you glimpse the horizon from the doorway, while still giving the living room some privacy. 1 THE SOFA The standout piece here is the Marenco sofa by Arflex – a design that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. With its rounded form, it brings balance to the space, gently softening the architectural rigour and adding a sense of comfort and fluidity. It’s an icon of Italian modular design and anchors the room with its bold, lowslung silhouette and rhythmic geometry. We conducted our own experiment by upholstering it in the Paxton fabric by James Hare, which visually connects the piece with the natural landscape outside the window. SPLIT DECISION In creating a duo-toned ivory and olive curtain in an imposing Sydney dining room, Studio Johnston ticked multiple boxes. ‘We used split-tone curtains to counterbalance the room’s overwhelming scale and bring a sense of intimacy – they guide the eye downward and foster a cosy, inviting environment,’ says Stefania Reynolds, project director and head of interiors. LA DOLCE VITA Restoring Sale e Pepe must have been a daunting task for London’s Hamilford Design. The iconic Italian in the heart of Knightsbridge is a staple of the city’s dining scene, seeing big names in film and fashion, politics and even royalty take a seat at its tables over the decades. Yet the studio has nailed the brief, bringing a renewed sense of glamour to the interiors. INTO THE WOODS I’m not sure he entirely fits the brief for this page, as the furniture maker James Bowyer isn’t new. But I do think that a lot more people – both designers and homeowners – should know about him; he’s somewhat of an unsung hero. The products he makes are just beautiful – the detail that goes into them is stunning. From tables and chairs to storage and lamps, he’s keen to show off what wood can do and will spend extra time cutting bow joints or extra dovetails, those flourishes only a true artist can do.
