PIP RICH I love the embellishments you’ve added to the vases in your new M&S collection and they fit with wider design moods I’m seeing. What were you thinking about when creating them? KELLY HOPPEN I’m obsessed with matt ceramics and chalk whites at the moment, but the shape has to be organic. I like to place objects one in front of the other, off-centre on a shelf, and doing that needs an interesting shape. I call the vase with the bobbles on it my dinosaur vase because that’s what my grandson would call it, and it was designed to easily fill spaces. judy Olson Dunne is a collector. Not of art, or of objects – though they do have a habit of finding their way to her, being a hazard of her interior designer job – but of people. BALANCING ACT Part of a wider mixed-use brownfield development by Loader Monteith, situated on the outskirts of Inverness, are two new low-energy homes. the last thing you’d expect inside this former set of offices at the end of a Parisian cul-de-sac is a mid-century-meets-cool surfer vibe, but that’s exactly what it serves. Part of its intrigue is based on that contradiction: the innocuous street it’s located in is actually a stone’s throw from the Eiffel Tower, while those Californian vibes are in fact the vision of its designer, Louis Aspar, Parisian born and bred, known for his almost futuristic treatment of fashion-forward restaurants, bars and homes. Synchronicity was at play when the owners of this classic-with-an-edge period townhouse in west London came to engage architectural designer Emilie Mauran to renovate their home. ‘They had seen various projects of mine – including my own house – in Livingetc over the years and they felt we’d be on the same wavelength,’ says Emilie. MOTIONS OF CLAY Barbados-born ceramicist Ronaldo Wiltshire has always had a passion for arts and crafts. The son of two potters, he spent most of his childhood immersed in his parents’ workshops. Now, he runs a studio in west London called Motions of Clay where, alongside his own work, he offers membership to ceramicists and runs courses for all levels. Ronaldo’s creations are tactile and tonal, made with a mix of techniques that stem right back to those he watched his parents use, namely ‘throwing, glaze formulation, mould making, slip casting, sculpting and hand building’. This means no two items are the same. For his Earth Tones series (above), inspired by the Canopic jars often found in the sacred ritual of mummification, Ronaldo intertwines ancient symbolism with modern artistic expression.…

Stained-glass windows are an age-old art form, but they haven’t been left in the dark. Often associated with churches, the craft is a surprising match for contemporary spaces thanks to updated shapes, patterns and palettes – plus, designers are increasingly dabbling with colour-drenching by using large panes of tinted glass to flood interiors with an energising glow. ‘Plain glass feels like a cold aesthetic nowadays; it no longer feels contemporary, nor has it a relevant personality,’ say Luis Laplace and Christophe Comoy, partners at Paris architectural firm Laplace. ‘It feels dated, while coloured materials bestow a fresh, creative potential in spaces.’ A renewed interest in colourful glass accents makes new interpretations of stained glass all the more exciting. ‘Unlike traditional leadlight windows that often have floral, organic reliefs, we’re seeing…

having lived in the heart of Manhattan for several years, the talented young interior designer Arianna De Gasperis — who helms And Studio — knows the West Village very well. 1 BORDER LINE Stripes are everywhere in interior decor, which makes it all the more exciting when designers manage to give them an update. Consider Esprit de Stripe, a new collection by New York rug maker Patterson Flynn that uses materials such as jute, silk and linen to transform one-dimensional lines; stripes just hit differently across these materials, often creating a surprisingly fresh watercolour effect. My favourite design is Majorelle, a hand-knotted wool rug that creates new stripes out of seemingly traditional borders (repeating motifs such as flowers and Greek key) in alternating concentric lines.
