Amongst many incredible pieces at London Design Festival back in September, one of the most uplifting was Rio Kobayashi’s Manus Manum Lavat, or ‘One hand washes the other’ in Latin. Each work from the designer and maker was created in collaboration with friends, from other designers and artists to DJs and chefs. There were many standout pieces, but possibly our favourite was the Piece of Cake sofa – a playful take on modular design, in collaboration with Flavia Brändle, that can be pulled apart and rearranged to suit (and also features another new favourite of ours, the personal side table). 1 WALL TO WALL Designed in collaboration with designer Henry Wilson and Brad Swartz Architecture, this narrow, 15ft home is bookended by two glass brick walls, so despite the small square footage, all the rooms are lofty and light. There’s a cohesive feel, with almost every space featuring glass blocks, and they diffuse the light beautifully. ‘I think most of us have got past the trauma of the 1980s and 1990s glass block windows in bathrooms, and that, combined with glass bricks now being available for building, has allowed for them to again be considered a great option for treating a facade,’ says Brad. ‘Glass blocks have particular value on inner city homes, but can be suitable for any project that needs to balance privacy with access to light.’ 2…

PRESENT PERFECT We’re thrilled that the 70s are back in a big way – this is a design decade so rich in inspiration, from earthy colour palettes to grounding materials like wood and rattan, that we could never get bored. So naturally, this bathroom in a family home in London has us considering a complete overhaul of our own. When it comes to decluttering a room, there are a whole host of tips, tricks and hacks you can try, but in some cases, it might help to adopt a more holistic approach. That’s exactly what lagom teaches. The Swedish ideology is all about living a balanced, moderately paced life, both at work and at home. SHAPE SHOW There is so much pleasure to be had in noticing clever little details, and that’s certainly the case with this red clay tile-cladded extension in north London by Bureau de Change. There are four tile shapes, each of a different traditional profile, brought together to create a fun, ornate and texturally interesting take on a tiled facade. TWIST AND TWIRL ‘Light and airy’ doesn’t begin to describe what London studio Artefact has created with Pirouette House, a ex-local authority home in Islington. This is no ordinary extension: the floor plan pirouettes (there’s the namesake) around a single triangular blue column. It’s that column, along with the other pops of colour – a yellow bookshelf here, a terracotta staircase there – that add so much charm to this build.…

Think about choosing finishes with a neutral tone – this often makes spaces feel larger than they are.
