The centrepiece of this issue of Landscape Architecture Australia is the presentation of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ state awards from Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. Congratulations to all the practices and people recognized in 2015. The jury from each state has penned a concise overview as an engaging backdrop to the results. All three address the future of landscape architecture. Every awards cohort is a statement about the future – a portent of longevity, popularity or relevance. The results can also be a manifesto. In Queensland (page 33) the jury observes that landscape architects are engaged “in city-making moves and regional planning of significant value in assisting the community’s preparedness for the future.” The social aspect is addressed in South Australia (page 41), with the jury asserting that…

JURY OVERVIEW The jury thanks all entrants of this year’s awards fora challenging and enjoyable day. Once again, South Australian practitioners have demonstrated thebreadth of their involvement in the design, deliveryand management of significant spaces throughout Adelaide and the state. Projects in the Design category range from multimillion-dollar state investments to streetscapes, local parks and intimate, special gardens. We were delighted to note the number and quality of playspaces entered. The Urban Design and Planning categories included some of the most significant developments in South Australia and beyond, all realized while focusing on capturing the unique qualities of specific locations. A noticeable trend was the increased sophistication of various modes of engagement, whether with fellow consultants, clients or increasingly diverse users. Rosie Halsmith: What is your current position and how did you get to where you are now? Pierre Quesnel: I am a graduate landscape architect at UDLA. I have a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Western Australia, which I completed after previously studying science courses and working as a scientist in the life science industry. Did you undertake any work experience during your degree? What did you gain from it? JURY OVERVIEW The results of the 2015 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Queensland awards demonstrate that anew level in the maturity of the profession has been achieved in Queensland over the past few years. This is remarkable given the challenges the industry has had to face, with a volatile economy, the changing political landscape and an uncertain policy framework in areas that influence the natural and built environments. Many of this year’s submissions were projects that have clearly involved our profession in looking at the big picture for sites and communities. Piet Oudolf and Noel Kingsbury, The Monacelli Press, 2015, hardcover, 400 pages To celebrate the seventieth birthday of Dutch plants-man and landscape designer Piet Oudolf, The Monacelli Press has published Oudolf Hummelo: A Journey Through a Plantsman’s Life by Oudolf and his long-time friend and collaborator Noel Kingsbury, a British garden writer. The chronology starts in 1982 with Oudolf’s founding private garden, Hummelo, near the Netherlands village of the same name. The home of Oudolf, his wife Anja and their two children (when growing up), it is visited by thousands of people each year. While not a biography, something we are told Dutch Calvinism would not encourage, the book charts more than three decades of the plantsman, nurseryman, landscape designer, writer and collaborator’s work. Clive Dodd was a creative, generous and dedicated man who championed new frontiers in the design of playspaces. He passed away on 8 July 2015 at the age of sixty, surrounded by family and friends. His continued and unwavering dedication to his family, friends and the industry he loved, while undertaking treatment for advanced-stage aggressive melanoma over the past years, was nothing short of inspirational. Clive was born on 5 June 1955 in England, the third son of Alfred and Muriel Dodd. He emigrated to Queensland with his family at the age of five. Clive was a high achiever in his studies, graduating with honours in civil engineering and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning. It continues to evolve in Australia in response to changing community needs. In 2016 the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects will celebrate its fifty-year anniversary. While in Australia to present a public lecture on his book Projective Ecologies, coedited with Nina-Marie Lister, Chris Reed spoke with Bridget Keane at RMIT University in Melbourne. Bridget Keane: The book Projective Ecologies, which you edited with Nina-Marie Lister, articulates the idea of parallel genealogies of ecological thinking. Could you elaborate on why this is so important to the understanding of ecology in landscape architecture? JURY OVERVIEW The jury was excited to see the breadth and quality of work carried out by landscape architects and by the profession’s ability to advocate for the Australian Landscape Principles through their work. The projects presented attest to landscape architecture’s deepening engagement and growing influence in the questions shaping our environment, whether through important applied research, long-term engagement in urban design, strategic insertions into the urban fabric, masterplanning or detailed design. These excellentprojects demonstrate the valuable contribution the profession is making to the quality of our environment. More than half of this year’s entries were submitted in the Design category, with entries in the Planning and Urban Design categories contributing a further third to the total number of entries. The centre of gravity in world affairs has shifted. Suddenly, remote patches of water normally used for fishing have become the focus of international controversy and massive infrastructural efforts. Host to the most crit-ical lanes of commercial shipping traffic on earth, where overfishing empties the water near shorelines and economic growth has outpaced oil supplies, the South China Sea is crisscrossed by contradictory terri-torial claims. Using construction to assert control over a string of low-lying landscape features by turning them into human-made structures, nations have claimed sovereignty over rocks, shoals, reefs, banks and cays closest to the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei and Taiwan.
