SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION, EXHIBITION AND ENTERTAINMENT PRECINCT Hassell is working with Lend Lease and Infrastructure NSW to deliver the public domain for Sydney’s new convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct in Darling Harbour. The twenty-hectare precinct will be revitalized with generous public parkland, event areas, enhanced gathering and meeting places, and better connections. Tumbalong Park will be expanded, as will the elevated event deck, integrated green roof and terraced landscape of native species. The Chinese Garden and Haymarket Squares will enliven the precinct’s new urban village with dining and retail opportunities, and The Boulevard will draw people in and reunite them with the city surrounds. Point Henry is a Geelong landmark embodying both Wathaurong country and colonial settlement, and epitomizes a landscape transformation from maritime and economic to post-industrial, while hosting vibrant recreational and birdwatching activities. Recently redundant as the site of an aluminium smelter, Point Henry needs a radical juxtaposition of design ideas for a new vision. Program Bachelor of Design, Major in Landscape Architecture, Queensland University of Technology PROJECT STATEMENT This project aims to restructure coral ecosystems by creating the ideal climatic conditions for coral growth. It focuses solely on the issue of excess nitrogen produced as a result of agricultural production, which has been linked to outbursts of crown-of-thorns starfish and a reduced resilience to coral bleaching. This project doesn’t aim to intervene in existing reef habitats but instead creates a refined site condition that facilitates coral growth and ensures its longevity. The project proposes a strategy that uses the additional sedimentation caused by coral bleaching to actively encourage the re-creation of these ecologies. The system increases coral sediment levels within the site, and diverts and filters excess nitrogen. Design techniques will define a site…

The manipulation or appropriation of landscape has historically been used as a powerful device for representing human ideologies and values. As I discovered, Kosciuszko is a name synonymous with the contested landscapes of two countries – one a naturally formed mountain peak revered for its grandeur and rugged beauty, and the other a human- made memorial peak steeped in the history of a nation. United in name and spirit, they express the ideals of democracy and liberty. My personal interest in the name Kosciuszko began while attending the Topos conference in Krakow, Poland in 2010 when Marcin Gajda of Polish landscape firm AKG Architektura Krajobrazu took me to view the Kopiec Kościuszki (Kosciuszko Mound). Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza, Perth, Western Australia Convic Finally, after much cumbersome public debate, dominated by the old right-wing (former leftie) conservatives of the inner Fremantle bourgeois, the infamous “Happy Park” of Fremantle Esplanade gets its much-awaited skateboard and scooter facility – sorry, “Youth Plaza.” The backstory to the confusion about public support for the plaza featured the voices of the so-called Fremantle Inner City Residents Association (FICRA) and counterattacks from residents of greater Fremantle. Not surprisingly, the parochial and purpose-built FICRA group felt that this area should be “a place of stillness and calm.” The debate was extremely protracted and lively, with public quotes accusing FICRA of being, among other things, “a group of antiquated, atavistic thugs – who will stop at nothing to stagnate the growth of Fremantle’s…

Program Master of Landscape Architecture, University of Adelaide PROJECT STATEMENT In Adelaide, temperatures have been observed seven degrees higher in the CBD than in the surrounding parklands. This temperature increase is referred to as the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Insufficient vegetation cover is a primary cause of UHIs. Vegetation cover can provide significant shading and evapotranspiration, and the lack of urban vegetation in Adelaide causes it to be an uncomfortable environment for large portions of the year. This results in the urban landscape being severely underused. The Canopy City project proposes mitigation of UHIs in Adelaide through a carefully considered vegetation and water-retention program that aims to create a series of diverse, intimate and thoughtful urban landscapes. As development has surged and the population grown, so too has the need for public open space, but how can you provide new green areas where no spare space exists? But it looks like a neat trick has been played at Port Adelaide – the landscape by Aspect Studios at the historic Hart’s Mill precinct really is an interesting place and it really does attract people as a destination in its own right. This proposal for a second Sydney airport, located at Badgerys Creek, delivers a system of landscape gestures that operate in direct response to fluctuating ecological, social and economic conditions. By rethinking the use of energy in the airport landscape, this project exploits an untapped and usually shunned source of airport energy: noise. Noise is harnessed, transmitted and circulated while being converted to useable energy, and is also used to create new social spaces and experiences. Program Master of Landscape Architecture, RMIT University PROJECT STATEMENT This project aims to address the complex systemic vulnerabilities intrinsic to industrial decline through strategic intervention and a process of decentralized decision-making. Its goal is the reclamation of disused components of an operational mining landscape. A subversion of existing power relationships underpins the work, at the level of both designer/ stakeholder interactions and design propositions for the Hazelwood lignite mine in Morwell, Victoria. An understanding of physical and abstract systems governing the site was pursued through an open participatory process, empowering stakeholders at various phases to have critical and generative input. Propositions range from the infrastructural to the programmatic to the regulatory, and champion a whole-systems approach to the radical adjustments inherent in industrial and economic shifts of this scale. Program Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, Honours, University of Western Australia PROJECT STATEMENT The site for this project is my family’s farm, located in the shire of Wongan-Ballidu in Western Australia. Here in the wheat belt, economies of scale are forcing the amalgamation of traditional family farms within the broadacre agriculture industry. Using a graphic information system and an iterative design process, this project combines emerging precision agricultural theory – including water-use efficiency, yield mapping and controlled traffic farming – with environmental and ecological landscape system design to devise a landscape strategy that could ensure long-term farming viability. A rigorous mapping process at both farm and regional scales generated an analysis of complex vegetation, hydrology, salinity, geology and agricultural processes and practices. Sarah Hicks: How did the Grasslands project begin? Linda Tegg: I wanted to know how the grassland [on the site] could coexist with the State Library of Victoria as it exists today. I had initially wanted to show the grassland in the library itself, within the Cowen Gallery, alongside the oil painting collection that depicts colonial history. I wanted to bring the plants that were barely represented within the library’s Pictures Collection into proximity with what is represented within the collection.
