JOBS FOR THE MONTH SOWING FOR GROWING
In the greenhouse and polytunnel, September is like a second spring. There is so much that can be sown now for cropping over winter, and through next spring too. Timing is crucial, with days getting cooler and shorter.
Starting (almost) everything off in seed trays and modules first and planting out as transplants means they are less at risk of being eaten by pests. Sow salad leaves, endives, spinach, kale, oriental leaves, spring cabbage, beetroot for leaves, pak choi, salad onions and annual herbs such as coriander and parsley. When they are about 5cm (2in) or so, plant out. They will grow happily in between tomatoes etc – when it is time to remove the summer crops, just cut at ground level.
