If you are lacking time but have a little space, consider perennial fruit and veg. You can even plant them in a garden border to create your own version of a forest garden. Once planted these need little attention and being deep-rooted need much less water – a big advantage with hotter, drier summers predicted:
LAYER ONE: Tree fruit – plant a fruit tree on dwarfing or semidwarfing rootstocks such as an apple, pear, plum or cherry. These can also be used to shade and shelter or even support a climbing crop such as beans once established.
LAYER TWO: Planted around the tree. Perennials such as rhubarb, globe and Jerusalem artichokes, perennial types of onion and kale, asparagus, herbs such as mint, oregano and chives.
