Autumn this year comes after a hot, oppressive, and drought-laden summer. Not the best for gardeners, especially if you are on a water meter so can’t economically use a lot of water.
The autumn months, however, are often more benign, with dwindling heat and, let’s hope, copious amounts of rain.
This year’s garden vegetables were poor, with runner bean flowers not being pollinated, so beans did not form and mature. Our courgettes were slow to grow, although we have had a few. Sweetcorn plants were short and only producing one cob per plant.
Onions did well and were readily harvested and stored. There was no problem with drying them this year. And maincrop potatoes, which have now been harvested, seemed to be fine, although the yield is down due to…
