In an age of spiralling stress and depression, with the NHS under immense pressure, Lindengate in Wendover is using an old allotment site to help people with mental health needs take time out, recuperate, socialise, and re-engage with society in a positive way. Some participants are lonely and depressed, while others have long-term health conditions such as autism or schizophrenia. All are treated with sympathy and respect, as they become engaged in gardening and craft projects specifically designed to improve their wellbeing.
The founders of Lindengate, Charlie and Sian, have both faced their own mental health challenges in the past. Charlie suffered from depression caused by work pressures, and Sian’s son, Tom, has Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, which wasn’t diagnosed until he was 15 years old.
