Details for the 2022 version of Historic Winton, Australia’s longest-running and most popular all-historic motorsport spectacle, have been announced, with this year’s event scheduled for 28-29 May. Presented by the Austin Seven Club in association with the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria (HMRAV), Historic Winton is held at Winton Motor Raceway, near Benalla in country Victoria. Across the two days, there will be 20 historic motorcycle and sidecar races across several categories, including Veteran, Class C, P3, P4, P5 and Unlimited. Ducati Corse have signed a new deal with Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia that will keep the 25-year-old Italian with the factory Ducati MotoGP team until the end of 2024. After winning the 2018 Moto2 World Championship, Bagnaia made his MotoGP debut with Pramac Racing Team in 2019 and achieved a podium for the Ducati satellite squad in 2020 before moving up to the factory Ducati Lenovo Team last year on a two-year contract. Thirty years after he won the 1992 500cc World Championship, Wayne Rainey will ride the very same bike he took to that title when he makes his first appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this June. Although paralysed from the chest down since an accident at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix, Rainey will still be able to ride the 1992-spec YZR500, thanks to Yamaha, who have modified the bike by moving the rear brake and gear-shift controls to the handlebars. Yamaha has withdrawn from the motorcycle category of the annual Dakar Rally, announcing in late February that they would not be contesting the 2023 event, nor would they take part in the remaining rounds of this year’s FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. Yamaha is the only manufacturer to have participated in every running of the Dakar since it was first held in 1979, and while they were successful in the event’s early years, a Yamaha rider has not taken overall victory in the fortnight-long marathon for the past 25 years.
