MotoGP and World Superbikes at Phillip Island could happen in the same month, following a rescheduling of the Australian round of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WSBK) to later in the 2021 season. Following the launch of the R 18 earlier this year, a new variant of BMW’s big, bold and black boxer twin cruiser will be coming in 2021 – the R 18 Classic. While the name suggests that the Classic increases the retro look of the R 18 even further, it’s not overly different from what’s already been presented. Dorna and the FIM have released the first draft calendar for the 2021 MotoGP season. Working on the presumption of international travel resuming, the calendar includes mostly familiar rounds, but adds three circuits as reserve, should COVID-19 conditions change. The 2021 provisional calendar reads a lot like the 2020 calendar before it was turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic and re-invented as a Europe-only series. Australia holds its late-October slot as part of the flyaways for 2021, but the notable changes are Thailand being moved to later in the year, the removal of a round at Brno and the 2021 season starting almost a full month later than usual. Ahead of its Australian arrival in the first half of 2021, Honda Australia has presented details and images of the heavily-revised Honda Grom. One of Honda’s most successful models since its local launch in 2016, the newfor-2021 Grom offers the same peaky 124cc single, low seat height, funky styling and LAMS-friendly specification as the original, but adds a number of new features. While full details are yet to be revealed, the key changes on the MY21 Grom include a new frame and a fully-revised, Euro5-compliant engine that offers more power. Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Joan Mir is the 2020 FIM MotoGP World Champion after taking an unassailable lead in the penultimate round of the championship at Valencia on 15 November. The 23-year-old from Mallorca in Spain won the title in only his second year in the premier class and his fifth full season of grand prix racing. Those five years include two in Moto3, where Mir won that World Championship in 2017 as a 20-year-old. This year’s MotoGP championship is also the first for a Suzuki rider since Kenny Roberts Jnr. in 2000.
